The University of the Sciences Athletics Hall of Fame welcomed its two newest members, Mark Shaw P’85 (Men’s Cross Country 1980-83) and Natalie Kohutka Grogan PT'94 (Softball, Women's Basketball 1989-93) on Saturday, December 4 in a halftime ceremony between the women’s and men’s basketball games versus Kutztown University.
Shaw, over the course of his four years at PCP&S developed himself into one of the most outstanding small college runners in the area, winning the Blue Devils first ever individual NAIA District title in 1982. The former Coatesville Area High School runner still has the seven fastest times ever recorded in the history of the program on the classic five mile course at Belmont Plateau, including a 27:23 performance at the District 19 meet in 1982. Shaw competed in two NAIA national championships in 1982 and 1983 and still holds the record for the best finish (137th) and best time (26:58) by a Devils cross country runner on the Wisconsin-Parkside course during the school’s NAIA era (1977-2002).
A three-time team most valuable player from 1981 to 1983, Shaw went undefeated in dual meet competition in 1982 and his teams compiled a 34-24-1 record over he course of his career. He concluded his career holding school record on seven different courses, records which still stand today. With his induction on Saturday, Mark will become the first men’s cross country runner to earn a spot in the institutions Athletic Hall of Fame.
Natalie Kohutka Grogan was a four year starter in women’s softball and started 65 games for the women’s basketball team from 1989-1993. She was also co-captain of both teams in her senior year.
A consummate team player during her years at PCP&S, Grogan did all the little things necessary for her teams to excel. A four year starter at shortstop, the former Pottsville Area High School athlete played in 69 of her teams 74 games as the Blue Devils compiled a 52-21-2 record from 1990 to 1993. Natalie concluded her softball career as the Blue Devils all-time assists leader with 164, a record which stood for seven years until broken in 2000. She is the ninth women’s softball player to earn a spot in the institution’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
On the basketball court, the Blue Devils compiled a 64-33 record over the course of Grogan’s career, including three trips to the NAIA District playoffs. Natalie posted a career high 225 points as a sophomore while starting all 24 games. She still ranks in the Devils top 20 all time in offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds and field goals made. Grogan concluded her career with 672 points (7.0 points/game)
