Thompson Named to Honorable Mention All-Conference & Devils earns CACC Team Sportsmanship Award

New Haven, Conn (5/5/09) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia men's baseball player Gary Thompson has been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Conference Men's Baseball Team as an honorable mention selection as announced today by the conference office. The voting is done by the league's eleven coaches.

In addition, the conference coaches voted the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia baseball team as the recipient of the 2010 Team Sportsmanship Award. The CACC Team Sportsmanship Award is given to the team in each sponsored conference sport that best exemplifies the spirit of athletic competition and sportsmanship. This is the second consecutive year that the Devils have won the CACC Team Sportsmanship award and their fourth overall, becoming the first program at the institution to earn four sportsmanship awards since the program's inception in 2003.

 Thompson (Timber Creek High School/Sicklerville, N.J.), appeared in seven games for the Devils and was the starting pitching in six of those contests. Gary led Sciences with two wins, 44 strikeouts and a 2.60 earned run average. Thompson also recorded two shutouts on the season, ranking amongst the league leaders. The senior southpaw's first shutout produced the Devils first win of the season, a 1-0 decision over Caldwell College. The shutout started a streak of 24 consecutive scoreless innings for the lefthander. Thompson threw his second shutout in his next start, a 2-0 win over Philadelphia University which propelled the Devils into the Bill Giles Invitational Championship game held at Citizens Bank Park. Thompson gave up just two earned runs over his last 30 innings pitched (a 0.59 ERA).

A four year starter for the Devils, Thompson closed out his career ranked second on the Devils all-time strikeout list with 162 and appearances with 50.

The Devils finished the season with a 4-36 overall record and a 1-19 conference mark.
