University of the Sciences Men’s Athletic Program Earns CACC Team Sportsmanship Award
New Haven, Conn. (June 8, 2010) - The University of the Sciences has earned the 2009-10 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men’s Team Sportsmanship Award in an announcement made by CACC Commissioner Dan Mara. Nyack College was announced as the winner of the Women’s Team Sportsmanship Award. This marks the second consecutive season that the Devils' men's athletic teams have earned this award.
The coaches of each CACC sport select a sportsmanship award winner at the conclusion of its respective season and institutions receive points for the votes they receive throughout the year. The point total for each school is then divided by the number of sports the institution sponsors to determine the overall winners for the academic year. One men’s program and one women’s program receives a plaque each year. The overall Team Sportsmanship Awards were first given out after the 2006-07 athletic season.
The CACC Overall Men's Sportsmanship Award will be presented at a ceremony hosted by Dr. Gerbino in between games of the women's and men's basketball doubleheader during the 2010-2011 basketball season.
The USP men’s athletic programs collected team sportsmanship awards this season in four sports: cross country; basketball, tennis and baseball en route to 19.8 points, ahead of Nyack (11.4) and Philadelphia University (11.0) who finished second and third, respectively. Felician College won the golf award, while Caldwell College was the winner in soccer. The Cougars finished fourth in the standings for the year.
Nyack College had won the men’s award in 2006-07 and 2007-08.
University of the Sciences sponsors five men’s and five women’s sports within the CACC. Men’s sports sponsored within the CACC are baseball, basketball, cross country, golf and tennis. CACC women’s sports sponsored by USciences include basketball, cross country, softball, tennis and volleyball. USciences also sponsors a mixed and a women’s rifle team, giving the Devils a total of 12 sports sponsored. The rifle teams are members of the Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC).
