Devils Swept by Marauders
The University of the Sciences men's baseball team's two-game winning streak was short lived as they dropped a pair of non-conference games to Millersville University on Sunday, 10-6 and 3-0 at Marauder Park in Millersville, Pennsylvania.
The two losses drop the Devils overall record to 3-9. Millersville, ranked #9 in their respective region (Atlantic) improve to 16-4 overall.
Sciences started the game with three straight singles, the third one by senior catcher Pete LaRocco brought home Nick Szalejko with the first Devils run. Mark Perry followed with a sacrifice fly to score Will Rebman and LaRocco later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0 going into the bottom of the first. The Marauders got two back in the bottom of the inning but the Devils again took a three run lead with two more in the top half of the second. Two throwing errors by 'Ville pitcher Brian Black in the inning allowed both Jay Andrews and Szalejko to score giving the Devils a 5-2 lead.
Millersville came storming back with five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 7-5 lead. The Marauders knocked five hits in the inning off losing pitcher John McConville (0-2) who had started the inning in relief of Greg Nealis.
The Devils made it 7-6 in the top of the fourth as Szalejko doubled to lead off the inning, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Marauders catcher Mike Perez. This was as close as the devils would get as 'Ville added three more in the fifth to make the final score 10-6.
In the nightcap, three Millersville pitchers combined to limit the Devils to just one hit as the Marauders completed the sweep with a 3-0 win. Starter Joe Roselli allowed just four hits but walked eight batters as his record fell to 0-2.
Millersville scored single runs in the first, fourth and sixth innings. Sciences lone hit came off the bat of Lou Tomasetti, who laced a single through the right side in the fifth inning.
The Devils return to action on Wednesday, March 23, 2011 when they host Wilmington University in a CACC doubleheader at Ashburn Field. First pitch is at 2:00 p.m.
