Peyton Named CACC Pitcher of the Week
New Haven, Conn. (3/21/11) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia baseball pitcher Luke Peyton has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 20, 2011.
Peyton (Haddonfield HS/Haddonfield, N.J.) threw two solid outings last week, recording a 1-0 record while sporting an earned run average of 0.82 and striking out 13 batters.
The junior right-hander threw 68 pitches in a five inning relief stint on Tuesday at Chestnut Hill. He faced just 16 batters, one above the minimum and did not allow a single hit and struck out four with a walk.
Four days later, Peyton started and earned his first win of the season at Concordia. Luke pitched six innings and threw 117 pitches allowing just two hits and one run while striking out nine. The win helped the Devils complete a doubleheader sweep of the Clippers and gave the Devils a 2-0 conference record. This was just Peyton's sixth career start. Included amongst his nine strikeouts was the 100th of his career becoming just the eighth player in school history to reach record 100 or more in their career.
Peyton allowed just two hits in his 11 innings of work while holding his opponents to a .054 batting average (2 for 37) including an 0-for-16 mark with runners on base.
This season, Peyton leads the team in earned run average (0.47) and is second on the team with 18 strikeouts. He has held opponents to just a .143 batting average.
Now in his third season of play for the Devils, Peyton appeared in 32 games for the Devils the past two seasons on the mound, mostly in relief. Now with 105 career strikeouts he stands seventh on the Devils all-time list.
