Devils Hang on to Defeat Griffins

T.J. Maiorino earned his first collegiate win as the University of the Sciences baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-5 win over Chestnut Hill College Thursday afternoon at Richie Ashburn Field in Philadelphia.

The Devils improve to 10-12 with the non-conference win while Chestnut hill falls to 9-15.

Maiorino (Bishop Eustace HS/Mount Laurel, N.J.) was dominant through the first five innings, limiting the Griffins to just two hits, an infield single in the second and a double in the fifth.   The freshman right-hander struggled in the sixth inning, giving up all five Chestnut Hill runs before giving way to classmate Michael Janas (Upper Mopreland HS/Hatboro, Pa.).  Janas allowed just one hit over the remaining 3.1 innings to earn his first collegiate save.   Maiorino gave up 7 hits and upped his record to 1-1 with the win.

The Devils staked Maiorino to a 7-0 lead with runs in four of the first five innings.  Connor Lennox (Avon Grove HS/Landenberg, Pa.) put the Devils on the board with an RBI single in the first, scoring Kyle Davis (Garnet Valley HS/Garnet Valley, Pa.) who had singled with two-out to start the rally.  Dan McMahon doubled to lead off the second inning and later scored on an infield error.  Jay Andrews (Hunter Sports HS/Springfield NSW Australia) later scored while C.J. Hertz (Sterling HS/Magnolia, N.J.,) was caught in a rundown after being picked off first to give the Devils a 3-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, the Devils loaded the bases with nobody out before Andrews grounded into a fielder's choice  to score Mike Gartland (Gloucester Catholic HS/Gloucester City, N.J.) with the fourth Sciences run.  Dan McMahon (Millville HS/Millville, N.J.) then scored as a result of a throwing error on the play, allowing Andrews to reach second. Three batters later Andrews scored on Jon McMahon's (Millville HS/Millville, N.J.) single and the Devils had a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth.   In the bottom of the fifth Hertz delivered an RBI single, scoring Ronnie Petito (North Fort Myers HS/Cape Coral, Fla.) to make the score 7-0.

The Griffins sent ten batters to the plate in the top half of the sixth, scoring five times and chasing Maiorino.  The big blow was a bases loaded double by Timothy DiMonte scoring all three base runners and pulling the Griffins within two 7-5.  The first two runs of the inning both scored on an infield throwing error.   Janas came in to pick up the final out of the inning.

Janas got the Griffins out in order in the seventh, allowed just a leadoff single in the eight before retiring the next three batters and again retired the Griffins in order in the ninth, preserving the win for Maiorino and picking up his first collegiate save.

Petito, Kyle O'Brien (Blue Mountasin HS/Orwigsburg, Pa.) and both McMahon brothers each finished the game with two hits, with Dan McMahon getting the Devils only extra-base hit of the game, a double in the second.  The team banged out 11 hits in all.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 6, 2013 when they travel north to face Concordia College in a CACC doubleheader in Bronxville, New York.
