NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of the Sciences baseball team received two of the three honors, as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) released the first weekly awards of the 2018 season on Monday.
Junior Nick Amicon was named the Player of the Week for his first-ever weekly accolade from the league, while Jordan Stennett was selected as the Rookie of the Week after his first weekend of collegiate competition.
Amicon reached base in six of his eight plate appearances over the weekend as USciences opened its 2018 season against regionally-ranked opposition. He finished 5-for-7 with three runs, three RBI and a walk in a doubleheader against Le Moyne, the No. 7 team in the NCBWA Preseason East Region Poll, on Saturday.
After finishing 1-for-2 with a walk and a run in game one of the doubleheader, Amicon recorded the first four-hit and three-RBI game of his career in the nightcap. He also scored two runs and had a double in the 10-9 triumph.
He doubled the lead to 7-5 with a single in the Devils' five-run fifth inning, and then put the finishing touches on a 10-run outburst with a two-RBI single in the sixth.
Stennett finished his first collegiate weekend 4-for-10 with four RBI, two doubles, a triple and a run.
His sacrifice bunt in game one against Le Moyne on Saturday led to the eventual tying run scoring in the sixth inning. He then had an RBI double to help erase an early deficit in the second inning of the nightcap, as well as an RBI in the five-run fifth.
Stennett broke out on Sunday against East Stroudsburg, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, a triple, a double and a run. He tied the score with an RBI double before eventually coming around to score as part of a four-run second inning, and then gave USciences the lead, 5-4, with a two-out RBI triple in the fifth.
University of the Sciences returns north to host its home-opener this coming weekend, welcoming Saint Anselm to Father Judge High School for a 12 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 24.
