Fabio Hits Grand Slam as Part of Perfect Day at the Plate; Baseball Falls at Regionally-Ranked Winston-Salem State

CHARLOTTE – The University of the Science (3-8)s baseball team opened the scoring in the first, but the Devils ultimately could not tame Winston-Salem State's bats in a 17-8 loss to the regionally-ranked Rams on Monday afternoon.

The first two outs of the afternoon were recorded in successive fashion, but Collin Fabio doubled and Ryan Scholey singled him home to put USciences on top 1-0.

That was part of quite a day for Fabio, as the junior transfer finished a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBIs, two runs and a walk, while also hitting a grand slam in the fifth.

That made the score 11-6, giving the Devils hope, but Winston-Salem State (11-6) came right back with five runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Freshman Jordan Stennett scored three runs on afternoon, walking twice in addition to recording a hit.

Christian DeLuca walked three times and scored twice.

Scholey reached base twice with a walk and a hit, while Jacob Whittington drew two base on balls.

Austin Blumetti and Jason Gallo did not allow an earned run in a combined 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Blumetti went the first 2.1 frames, yielding three hits and a walk with two strikeouts.

Gallo then worked a 1-2-3 eighth.
