Four Basketball Players Named to CACC Winter Academic Team

New Haven, Conn.(3/30/11) – Two members of the University of the Sciences men’s basketball team and two members of the women’s basketball team have been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Winter All-Academic Team as announced by the conference office today.

In order to be named to the CACC All-Academic team, recipients must have participated in a winter CACC Championship sport, be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, have been a student at their current school for at least two semesters, and achieve a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.50 or higher.

Named from the women’s basketball team were senior Melissa Rotz (Central Dauphin High School/Harrisburg, Pa.) and sophomore CarolynEdwards (St. Basil Academy/Huntington Valley, Pa.).  USciences two men’s basketball honorees were senior Adewale Adefemi (Winslow Township High School/Chesilhurst, N.J.) and Kyle Flannery (Monmouth Academy/Lakewood, N.J.).  The four student athletes were amongst the 22 women’s basketball players and 11 men’s player to earn 2010-11 CACC Winter All-Academic honors.

Rotz, a pharmacy major in her third professional year (fifth overall) in the university’s Doctor of Pharmacy program, recorded the highest grade point average amongst all 34 honorees with a 3.973 and has now earned CACC All-Academic team honors three times.  Melissa has earned Dean’s List honors in each of her nine semesters at the institution. Earlier this season, Rotz was named the CACC Student-Athlete of the Month for January.  She is also a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, a two-time Philadelphia Area All-Academic Team selection and has also been recognized by the Division II Athletic Directors Association (DII-ADA) as an Academic Achievement Award winner the past two years. Rotz was also inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society in the spring 2007 semester.

Melissa played and started in 25 games for the Devils this season, and helped lead the Sciences squad to a 21-3 record. The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native averaged 4.0 points per game and was third on the team with 86 assists.  Rotz finished her career ranked  11th on the Devils career assists list with 273 and 12th all-time in three-point field goals made with 50.

Flannery, a junior, is a two time-honoree this season. A third year pharmacy major, Flannery has earned Dean's List honors in each of his five semesters at the institution and has a 3.62 g.p.a. He was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society in the spring 2009 semester. A reserve forward, Flannery saw missed nearly the entire 2010-11 season for medical reasons.

Adefemi earns CACC All-Academic honors for the first time this year.  The senior forward led the Devils in scoring (16.4 ppg.), rebounding (10.1/gm.) and field goal percentage (48.4%) in leading the Devils to their first playoff berth since the 2007-08 season.  Earlier this season he was named to the First Team All-CACC, one of three first team All-CACC men’s basketball players to do so.

Edwards rounds out the four honorees for the Devils.  A sophomore forward, Carolyn is in her second year in the institution’s occupational therapy program.  She has earned Dean’s List honors the last two semesters and has a 3.54 g.p.a.   Edwards appeared in 25 games for the Devils this year, averaging 10.7 minutes per game and 2.9 points/game.

The four honorees are amongst 14 student-athletes from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia earning CACC All-Academic honors during the 10-11 academic year, joining 10 others from the CACC Fall Academic Team. Rotzis the first USciences women's basketball player to receive this honor three times. Flannery is the first two-time men's basketball team honoree and Adefemi is only the second men’s basketball player from the school to be named to the team.  Edwards is the sixth USciences women’s basketball player to be honored player since the CACC All-Academic program’s inception in 2004.

A total of 68 different student athletes from the University of the Sciences have earned CACC All-Academic honors a total of 122 times since the program began in 2004. Thirty-nine of these 68 are repeat selections with 19 of those earning All-Academic honors three times and one earning All-Academic honors six times (two sports) over the past six years.
