Seven USciences Student-Athletes Named To the CACC Fall Academic Team
New Haven, Conn. (January 18, 2012) – Seven University of the Sciences in Philadelphia student-athletes were named to the 2011 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall All-Academic Team as announced by the conference office.
To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a fall CACC championship sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. The seven Devils were among 188 honorees in six sports from all 14 conference schools. Five of the seven are repeat selections from last year’s team.
Leading the way was senior men’s cross country runner Francisco Garcia (Don Cesar Gascon/Balcarce, Buenos Aires, Argentina) . Garcia, a computer science major with a 3.74 grade point average, was named to the CACC Fall Academic Team for the third time. He also was previously named to the conference’s spring all-academic team three times as a men’s tennis player, thus becoming a six-time honoree. Garcia is the second USciences athlete to earn six CACC All-Academic honors and just the third athlete in conference history to do so, joining USciences’ Shelby Rance (women’s cross country/women’s basketball 2004-07) and Caldwell College’s Bard Skjelstad (men’s soccer/men’s golf 2004-07).
Garcia’s teammate Tuynh Nguyen (Montgomery Blair HS (Md.)/Morrow, Ga.) and women’s cross country runners Unicel-Anne Flores (McNair Academic HS/Jersey City, N.J.) and Jessica Kaminski (Charter School of Wilmington /Hockessin, Del.) became three-time honorees with their selection this season. Nguyen, a fifth-year senior, has a 3.64 grade point average and is in his third professional year in USciences’ Doctor of Pharmacy program. Kaminski, also a fifth year senior, has a 3.86 g.p.a. and is in her third professional year in the institution's Doctor of Pharmacy program. Flores completed her fourth season of competition this fall and is in her second professional year in USciences’ Doctor of Pharmacy program sporting a 3.74 grade point average.
A third women’s cross country runner joins the ranks of repeat selections to the conference all-academic team. Kristin Waters (West Genesee HS/Syracuse, N.Y.) earned her second all-academic honor with a 3.77 grade point average. Waters in is her first professional year (third overall) in the institution's Doctor of Pharmacy program.
A pair of sophomores round out the Devils seven honorees. Named to the All-Academic team for the first time are women’s volleyball player Diana Solomon (East Islip HS/East Islip, N.Y.) and women’s tennis player Tea Cadenovic (Williamstown HS/Williamstown, N.J.). Solomon has a 3.66 g.p.a. while Cadenovic has a 3.80 average. Both Solomon and Cadenovic are second year pharmacy majors.
A total of 81 different student athletes from the University of the Sciences have earned CACC All-Academic honors a total of 155 times since the program began in 2004. Forty-three of these 81 are repeat selections with 23 of those earning All-Academic honors three times and a pair of two-sport athletes earning All-Academic honors six times over the past eight seasons.
