Devils Picked Fourth in CACC Pre-Season Poll

The University of the Sciences men’s basketball team has been picked fourth in the 2010-11 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pre-Season basketball poll released earlier today. The conference’s 13 head coaches conducted the voting.

USciences received 33 votes in the poll behind Chestnut Hill College’s 41. Philadelphia University was predicted to win the Southern Division after garnering 12 of  13 first-place votes and 77 points. Goldey-Beacom College earned the other first place vote and was picked to finish second with 65 points

Bloomfield College narrowly earned the top spot in the Northern Division, earning six of the 13 first place votes and 83  points. Felician College was picked to finish second, getting 82  points and the other seven first place votes.   Dominican College was third with 60 points, followed by Post University with 42 points.

Four starters return from last year’s 7-20 team, led by senior Adewale Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/ Chesilhurst, N.J.).  Adefemi was a second team All-CACC selection last season, leading the team in scoring (15.5 ppg.) and rebounds (9.0 rpg.)  ‘Wale also scored his 1,000th career point in the Devils final game last season. 

Sophomore point guard Will Kernan (Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) averaged 12.1 points per game and led the Devils in assists (112) and steals (43) while shooting .341 (29-85) from three-point range.  Senior small forward Omari Phillip (Germantown Friends School/Elkins Park, Pa.)  is also a long range threat hitting 29 ‘threes’ last season while averaging 5.6 points per game.   Junior forward Myer Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.)  started the Devils first 21 games last season before an ankle injury ended his year.  Messinger was the Devils second leading rebounder, averaging 6.2 per game while scoring 9.3 points per game. 

Seven additional returnees who saw limited action last year along with newcomersPatrick Connaghan (Warrington, Pa.) andTyrone Mann-Barnes(Collingswood, N.J.) are all expected to contribute this season, head coach David Pauley’s 29th year with the program, the last 11 as its head coach.

The Devils open their season at Cheyney University on November 13, 2010.  The Devils will face six straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents to open their season before conference play begins on December 11, 2010 at Wilmington University.
