Solid Second Half Powers Devils to Victory
Adewale Adefemi recorded his 11th double-double of the season as the University of the Sciences men's won a conference road game for just the second time this season, defeating Caldwell College 73-62 before a large crowd at the George R. Newman Center in Caldwell, New Jersey.
The Devils improve to 10-9 overall with the win and 6-7 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Caldwell falls to 7-14 overall and 4-9 ion league play.
Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.) scored a game-high 19 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/Woodlynne, N.J.) also had 19 points while William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) added 13.
Tyler Emmons had 17 points and Dante Rollins added 16 to pace the Cougars. Emmons also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Anthony Gill dished out four assists.
The Devils led by as many as six and the Cougars four in a see-saw first half which saw four ties and five lead changes. When the dust settled the Cougars held a 31-29 lead at the break.
An 11-5 run by the Devils to open the second half gave the Devils a 40-36 lead at the 16:33 mark. Caldwell responded with six straight points to reclaim the lead 42-40. Sciences followed with a 17-6 uprising, capped by an Adefemi dunk to boost the lead to nine 57-48 with 6:53 left in the game. A 10-4 run by the Cougars cut the margin to three, 61-58 with 3:20 left before Kernan and Mann-Barnes each sank a pair of free throws to give the Devils a seven point lead 65-58 with 2:45 remaining on the clock. Caldwell got as close as five, 65-60 with 1:59 left but the Devils outscored their hosts 8-2 over the final two minutes to pull away with the win.
The Devils shot 53.2% for the game (25-47) and outrebounded the Cougars 42-29 offsetting a poor performance from beyond the arc (2-9). Caldwell made 7-16 from long range and shot 20-54 from the field (37%). Caldwell did commit seven fewer turnovers (20-13) but the Devils turned in a dominant effort in the point, outscoring the Cougars, 46-8.
The men's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 when they travel across the river to face area rival Philadelphia University. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.
