Devils Fall Victim to Long Range Bombing
A long range bombing attack took place Saturday afternoon in Orangeburg, New York as host Dominican College used the three-point shot again and again to put away the University of the Sciences men's basketball team, 69-56.
The loss drops the Devils record to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. Dominican improves to 12-8 overall and 8-2 in league play.
The Chargers connected on nearly half of their three-point shots, making 12 in 25 attempts while the Devils made just two out of 12 shots. Leon Porter made four of those 'treys' (4-8) and led all players with 17 points. Gerald Hill came off the bench to make three 'threes' and finished the game with 11 points. Khaleev Ginyard was the chargers other long range bomber, hitting three of eight shots and finishing with nine points. Almin Hodzic added 12 points and nine rebounds. Porter also had six assists.
William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) led the Devils with 16 points (6-12 FG, 4-7 FT) and three assists while Myer Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) added 14 (6-8 FG) and Adewale Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.) chipped in 12. Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.) had a game-high ten rebounds.
The Devils held the lead, albeit no larger than four over the first nine minutes of the game Hodzic's layup at 11:45 gave DC their first lead 12-10 before Kernan knotted things up again at 12-all at the 11:13 mark. The Chargers then went on a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to take a 25-14 lead with 5:34 left in the period. Sciences shaved two points off that margin as they went into the locker room trailing 31-22 at the break.
A free throw by Kernan and a layup and-one from Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/Woodlynne, N.J.) brought the Devils within five 31-26 in the opening minute of the final period but a 12-4 run by the Chargers, punctuated with a pair of threes by Porter boosted the lead to 13, 43-30 with 15:14 left. Messinger's 3-ball at 10:45 closed the gap to nine, 49-40 before another three-point onslaught expanded the DC lead to 16 60-44 with 7:39 left. The Devils pulled back wtihn 11 6-49 with 5:52 left. The lead oscillated between 11 and 15 until the 2:52 mark when both teams emptied their benches. Mann-Barnes rounded out the scoring for the devils with a three-point field goal , his only one of the game, with 30 seconds left, making the final margin 69-56.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 when they take on Chestnut Hill College at CHC's Sorgenti Arena. Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
