Devils Cruise to Easy Win over Felician

Adewale Adefemi recorded his seventh double-double of the season and Myer Messinger his fifth as the University of the Sciences men's basketball team earned their eighth win of the season, handily defeating Felician College 75-57 Saturday at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.

The win improves the Devils record to 8-5 overall and 4-3 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.    Felician falls to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in league play.   The Devils eight wins also eclipses last year's total of seven.

For the fourth time this season and third time in the last four games, the Devils' two big men have recorded double-doubles in the same game.  Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.) turned in a dominant effort, falling one shy of his career high with 27 points while grabbing ten rebounds (seven offensive).  'Wale connected on 11 of 17 shots from the field and had a solid 5-6 effort from the free throw line.  Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) collected 13 points on 6-9 shooting from the field while grabbing 10 rebounds.

William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) and Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/Woodlynne, Pa.) also joined Adefemi and Messinger in double figures scoring 13 points apiece.  Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.) had a game high 12 rebounds while dishing out four assists.  Messinger also had four assists.

Suquan Gary led the Golden Falcons with 16 points while Devon Young and C.T. Williams had 12 and 10 respectively.   Kashiff Foster had seven rebounds to lead the visitors.

The Devils used a 23-4 run in the first half to turn a 9-all tie into a 19-point lead 32-13 with 6:54 left in the period.  The run included 16 straight points to take the score form 16-13 to 32-13.  All five starters contributed to the effort.  Gary's layup at the 6:23 mark broke the run before the Devils increased the lead to 21, 40-19 on an Alec McClure (Wissahickon HS/Blue Bell, Pa.) layup with 2:52 left.    Felician closed the half with a 7-2 run, giving the Devils a 42-26 lead at the break.

Sciences opened the second half with an 11-4 getting one basket from each of their starters including a 3-ball from Messinger to take their biggest lead of the game, 53-30 with 15:13 left.  Felician cut the lead to 16 on two occasions over the next 6 ½ minutes but the Devils took advantage of two straight turnovers and again took a 23-point lead 69-46 with 5:33 left.  From that point the Golden Falcons could come no closer than 18 the rest of the way including the final margin of 75-57.

Sciences continued their red hot shooting from the field, topping the 54% mark for the third time in the last four games (all wins).  The Devils connected on 32-59 shots from the field (54.2%) while holding Felician to just 35.1% (20-57) shooting.  The Devils also held a huge 46-29 advantage on the glass and had the better assist/turnover ratio 15/13 to 12/14.     About the only thing the Devils did not dominate was their free throw shooting (9-19, 47.4% to Felician's 12-18).  Felician did have more three-point field goals (5-2) but shot just 20% (5-25) while the Devils made 25% (2-8).

The men's basketball team is back in action on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 when they host Philadelphia University in a CACC southern division showdown.  Tipoff is set for 8:00 p.m.
