Adefemi's Double ' Double-Double' Shocks the Shock as Devils Win.
Adewale Adefemi recorded a double 'double-double' as the University of the Sciences men's basketball team cruised to a 76-52 non-conference win over Washington Adventist University Thursday night at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.
The Devils improve to 11-10 overall with the win. Washington Adventist falls to 7-14.
Adefemi (Winslow Township HS/Chesilhurst, N.J.) scored 20 points and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds to lead all scorers. 'Wale also dished out seven assists and added a steal and two blocks. He shot 7-for-14 from the field and 6-for-10 from the free throw line. Myer Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) added 17 points (8-14 FG) while William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) chipped in 14 points. Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/Woodlynne, N.J.) was the fourth Sciences player in double figures, scoring 12 points. Patrick Connaghan (Chsetnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.) added 13 rebounds and seven points.
Jamie Newton led the Shock with 14 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Antonio Ortega and Daray Hill had 10 points apiece.
An early Shock lead was erased on the heels of a 12-2 spurt by the Devils in the first half who got scoring from six different players during the run to take an 18-9 lead with 8:55 left. WAU shaved the lead down to five but the Devils countered with an 11-5 run to give the hosts a double-digit lead 39-18 with 4:44 left in the half. The shock shaved a single point off the margin by the break keeping the Devils lead in double digits, 36-26. Adefemi had 14 points and 13 rebounds by halftime.
A Mann-Barnes 'trey' to open the final stanza gave Sciences a 13-point lead 39-26. The lead then vacillated between eight and 14 points over the next nine minutes with a Messinger jumper pushing the lead to 15 57-42 with 10:27 left, starting what would be a 15-2 run to put the game out of reach. Adefemi grabbed his 19th rebound at the 5:03 mark and 11 seconds later went to the line and sank two free throws. His 20th and final rebound came on the Shock's next possession, scooping the ball off the glass on missed layup at the 4:34 mark. As the shot clock was winding down Adefemi made a 16 foot fadeaway jumper for his 19th and 20th points of the game, completing the double 'double-double. Two layups from Ben Edwards (Central Bucks South HS/Warrington, Pa.) and another from Kernan gave the Devils their biggest lead, 76-44 with 2:16 left. Washington Adventist scored the final eight points to bring the score to 76-52 as the buzzer sounded.
The Devils dominated this game from nearly every angle, outshooting the shock from the field (44.8% to 26.0%) and free throw line (58.3% to 40%), and holding a huge 64-37 rebounding advantage. Sciences did commit six more turnovers than WAU (19-13) which proved to be a non factor as the game wore on. The Shock did make three times as many three-pointers as the devils (6-2) but also took 26 shots from beyond the arc to Sciences' nine.
The men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 19, 2011 when they host Bloomfield College at the Bobby Morgan Arena. The game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
