Purple Knights Defeat Devils

The University of the Sciences men's basketball team squandered a 12-point early second half lead as the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights rallied to defeat the Devils 66-58 in Bridgeport, Connecticut Saturday afternoon. 

The loss drops the Devils record to 1-3.  Bridgeport improves to 4-4.

Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood H.S/Woodlynne, Pa.) led four Devils players in double figures with 14 points (4-9 3FG).  Myer Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) added 13 points while Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/ Warrington, Pa.) and William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) had 12 and 11 respectively.  Connaghan led the Devils with eight rebounds.  Henry Messinger (Dallas area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) added six boards to go along with his eight points.  Kernan and Myer Messinger had three assists apiece. 

Darian David led the Purple Knights with 19 points and William Harrison added 12 and a team-high eight rebounds.  Hakeem Rodriguez had a game-high six assists. 

The Devils led by as many as five in the early part of the opening period before Bridgeport rallied to take a 21-20 lead with 6:120 left.  A pair of '3-balls' from Mann-Barnes helped fuel a 13-2 rally to close out the period, giving the Devils a 33-23 lead at the break.  

Myer Messinger's layup boosted the lead to 35-23 early in the final stanza and the Devils still held a double-digit lead through the first five minutes before the Purple Knights blazed a 16-1 run to grab a 43-39 lead with 10:21 left.  Kernan's two free throws and a bucket-and-1 from Myer Messinger put the Devils back on top for the moment 44-43.  The lead see-sawed back a forth over the next few possessions by both teams and the scored was knotted at 47-47 with 6:53 left.  The Purple Knights outscored the Devils 17-8 over the next 6:23 to take their biggest lead of nine, 64-55 with just 30 ticks left on the clock.   Myer Messinger's 'trey' with 19 seconds left provided the final scoring for the Devils.  Adam Glantz added a basket at the buzzer for UB to make the final score 66-58. 

Bridgeport outshot the Devils 48.1% (25-52) to 43.5% (20-46) as well as holding a 34-29 advantage on the glass.  The Devils were the better free throw shooting team in this contest making 11 of 17 shots while UB made 11 of 21.  The Purple Knights did turn in a better assist/turnover margin 14/18 to 13/21.       

The Devils open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play next week traveling to Goldey-Beacom College to take on the Lightning in a CACC Southern Division clash.   Tipoff is 8:00 p.m.
