Devils Picked Fourth in CACC Pre-Season Poll
The University of the Sciences men's basketball team has been picked fourth in the 2011-12 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Pre-Season basketball poll released earlier. The conference's 13 head coaches conducted the voting.
USciences received 36 votes in the poll behind Goldey-Beacom College's 46. Chestnut Hill was narrowly picked to win the CACC South with 69 points and five first place votes. Philadelphia University was second with 68 points and seven first place votes. Goldey-Beacom College picked up the remaining first-place vote.
Bloomfield College picked of nine of the 13 first place votes and 85 points to finish well ahead of Dominican College who garnered three first place votes and 71 points. Post University picked up the other first place vote and finished third in the poll with 70 points.
Four starters return from last year's 12-13 team led by guards Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/ Woodlynne, N.J.) and Will Kernan (Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.). Mann-Barnes, the 2010-11 CACC Rookie of the Year, averaged 12.8 points per game while making 51 three-point field goals. Tyrone was also second on the team with 43 steals. Kernan led the team in steals with 46 and assists with 87 while averaging 11.4 points per game.
Two of the Devils top three rebounders also return for the Devils.Senior Myer Messinger (Dallas Area HS/Trucksville, Pa.) averaged 7.2 rebounds and 12.3 points per game while sophomore Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.) pulled down 7.3 boards per game and was second on the team with 51 assists.
Four additional returnees along with newcomers Garret Kerr (Middle Township HS/Moorestown, N.J.) and Kirk Wynn(George School/ Philadelphia, Pa.) are all expected to contribute this season as head coach David Pauley begins his 30th year with the program, the last 12 as its head coach.
The Devils open their season at West Chester University on November 13, 2011. The Devils will face three Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents and East Coast Conference foe University of Bridgeport to open their season before conference play begins on December 6, 2011 at Goldey-Beacom College.
