Kernan Named Sam Cozen Small College Player of the Week
Philadelphia, Pa. (December 5, 2011) - University of the Sciences men's basketball player William Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.) was honored as the Sam Cozen Small College Player of the Week by the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association at their luncheon Monday at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Now in its 25th season, the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association honors area small college basketball players at their bi-weekly luncheons, not only for the performance on the court, but for their leadership and their academic success, ideals emphasized by the late Sam Cozen, longtime coach at Drexel University and for whom the award is named.
The junior guard led the Devils with 19 points and seven assists as USciences recorded its first win ever against Millersville University last Wednesday, 87-71. Kernan connected on six of 11 shots from the field and was 7-12 from the free throw line. He followed up his Millersville performance with 11 points and three assists in the Devils 66-58 loss at the University of Bridgeport.
Through the Devils first four games of the season, Kernan is the Devils leading scorer and playmaker, averaging 13.0 points per game and 4.25 assists per game. He is second on the team with four steals and fourth in rebounding, averaging 3.5 per game. His 23 free throws made is tops on the team.
The former Lawrenceville School athlete is in his third season as a member of the USciences men’s basketball team. Entering the 2011-12 season, Kernan has averaged 11.8 points per game in 52 career games and ranks 20th on the Devils all-time steal list with 89.
Kernan is a Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Business major at the University of the Sciences.
