Kerr Named CACC Rookie of the Week

University of the Sciences men’s basketball player Garret Kerr was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week for his performance during the week ending January 23, 2012.

This week’s honor marks the third time in the last four weeks that Kerr (Middle Township High School/Moorestown, N.J.) has earned Rookie of the Week honors.   He was also named CACC Player of the Week just prior to Christmas and has now received a weekly conference honor four times this season.

Kerr tied a school record last week recording double-doubles in both of the Devils games, extending his consecutive double-double streak to nine.  This equals the mark set by Bill Tedor during the 1976-77 season.  Over this nine game stretch Kerr has averaged 19 points and 15.7 rebounds per game.

In both games this week as in each of his previous double-doubles, Kerr recorded 13 or more rebounds.  Kerr opened the week with a 14-rebound, 16-point effort in the Devils loss at Wilmington University and ended the week with a 18-point, 19-rebound performance against Caldwell College, leading the Devils to their first CACC win of the season.

Kerr connected on six of ten shots in the Devils loss against Wilmington on Tuesday and added four free throws to equal his 16-point total.  Garret also added a team-high four assists and three steals.  On Saturday, Kerr had his double-double by halftime with 10-points and 12 rebounds in the first half alone.  He added eight more points and another seven boards in the final 20 minutes as the Devils hung on to win their first conference game of the season.

For the week, Kerr averaged 17.0 points and 16.5 rebounds per game while shooting 57.8% from the field.  He also averaged 2.0 assists and 2.5 steals per game.   Garret is currently the top rebounder in the country amongst all NCAA Division II players and has the 4th highest rebounding average amongst all NCAA Division (I, II or III) men’s basketball players.

The former Middle Township High School Athlete is in his first season of play for the Devils.  A 1000+-point scorer in high school, Kerr was a First Team All-South Jersey honoree as a senior, leading Middle Township to the South Jersey Group II Championship.  Garret is a physical therapy major at the University of the Sciences
