A Pair of Honors for USciences' Kerr
University of the Sciences men's basketball player Garret Kerr has earned pair of honors this week for his performances on the basketball court. Kerr was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate conference Co-Rookie of the Week for his performance during the week ending February 5, 2012 and will also be honored as the Sam Cozen Player of the Week.
This week's conference honor marks the third consecutive week and fifth time in the last six weeks that Kerr (Middle Township High School/Moorestown, N.J.) has earned Rookie of the Week honors. He was also named CACC Player of the Week just prior to Christmas and has now received a weekly conference honor six times this season.
Kerr's other honor this week, the Sam Cozen Player of the Week is presented by the Philadelphia Small College Coach's Association at their bi-weekly luncheons. Now in its 25th season, the Philadelphia Area Small College Coaches Association honors area small college basketball players at their bi-weekly luncheons, not only for the performance on the court, but for their leadership and their academic success, ideals emphasized by the late Sam Cozen, longtime coach at Drexel University and for whom the award is named.
Kerr recorded double-doubles in all three of the Devils games last week, extending his school record streak of consecutive double-double games to 14. Over this 14-game stretch Kerr has averaged 18.6 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. The streak is the longest streak in NCAA Division II this year and the second longest active streak this season amongst all NCAA basketball schools behind A.J. Mathews of Farmingdale State (18).
The freshman small forward had 14 points and 15 rebounds in the Devils 70-60 loss to Dominican on Saturday and recorded 14 points and 10 boards three days earlier as the Devils fell to Chestnut Hill on Wednesday.
Kerr opened the week by scoring 21 points and grabbing 12 rebounds as the Devils defeated Cheyney University 78-68. Kerr connected on nine of 10 shots from the field and added three more points from the free throw line. He also dished out three assists.
For the week, Kerr averaged 16.3 points and 12.3 rebounds per game while shooting 55.2% from the field. He also averaged 1.7 assists per game. Garret is currently the top rebounder in the country amongst all NCAA Division II players and has the 4th highest rebounding average amongst all NCAA Division (I, II or III) men's basketball players.
The former Middle Township High School Athlete is in his first season of play for the Devils. A 1000+-point scorer in high school, Kerr was a First Team All-South Jersey honoree as a senior, leading Middle Township to the South Jersey Group II Championship. Garret is a physical therapy major at the University of the Sciences.
