Eagles Hand Devils their Fifth Loss of Season
The University of the Sciences men's basketball team put three players in double figures but came up short against the visiting Eagles of Post University, 63-55 Saturday afternoon at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games with the loss. The Eagles improve to 2-6 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Tyrone Mann-Barnes (Collingswood HS/Woodlynne, N.J.) led Sciences with 17 points (5-15 FG, 3-12 3FG, 4-6 FT). Garret Kerr (Middle Township HS/Moorestown, N.J.) added 14 points (6-13 FG) and a career high 13 rebounds in 34 minutes off the bench. Patrick Connaghan (Chestnut Hill Academy/Warrington, Pa.) added 12 points.
Josh Lopez led the Eagles with 24 points (8-15 FG, 6-6 FT) and Zach Krischer added 17 points. Reginald Holding Jr. had six rebounds and Lopez and Jake Wilcox had four assists apiece. Lopez also had six steals.
The Eagles took command of the game early on, outscoring the Devils 21-11 over the first 12:40 to take a double digit lead. The Eagles added another point and led by 11, 26-15 when the Devils made a solid charge and closed out the half with a 9-2 run to trail by four at the break 28-24. Highlighting the run was a three-pointer from Barnes followed by consecutive steals and subsequent dunks from Kerr and Connaghan.
Post held the Devils without a field goal for the first 5:41 on the second half while more than doubling their lead, 37-28 before a Kerr layup at the 14:19 mark broke the drought. Two baskets from Lopez put the Eagles back up by 11, 43-32 before the Devils clawed their way back with a 15-6 spurt to get within two, 49-47. Two triples from Mann-Barnes started the run with Kerr contributing a free throw and Connaghan five points before Mann-Barnes fast-break layup at the 6:08 mark made the score 49-47. A steal and layup from Lopez and a 3-ball from Krischer put the Eagles back up by seven, 54-47 at the 3:30 mark, leaving the Devils scrambling for another comeback which did not happen. The Eagles made nine of 12 free throws over the final 2:53 to seal the eight point win, 63-55.
Free throw shooting again was a factor as the Devils made just 12 of 21 shots from the charity stripe (57.1%). Post was slightly better making 13 of 20 (65%) and was the better shooting team 43.1% to 37%. The Eagles doubled up the Devils beyond the arc 6-3 offsetting the Devils 43-30 edge on the glass (which included 17 offensive rebounds for the home team). Post had the better assist/turnover mark 11/13 to 4/17 for the Devils who were without the services of point guard Will Kernan (The Lawrenceville School/Medford, N.J.). Kernan left the game with an injury just two minutes after the tipoff. The Eagles took advantage of the Devils sloppy play scoring 19 points off the Sciences' miscues.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 17, 2011 when they host Philadelphia University in a CACC Southern Division showdown. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
