Men’s Basketball Upsets Top Seed Bloomfield, 72-63, in CACC Quarterfinals

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – The University of the Sciences men's basketball team stunned top seed Bloomfield, 72-63, in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Quarterfinals on Tuesday night.

The Devils advance the CACC Semifinals for the fourth time in five years, where they will play at Jefferson – the No. 2 seed in the South – on Saturday, March 3 at 7:00 p.m.

The winner advances to the CACC Championship, also at Jefferson, to play the winner of Goldey-Beacom and Dominican on Sunday, March 4 at 2:30 p.m.

Just as it has done all year, USciences (16-12) used a combination of rebounding and defense to help it pull off the upset of the No. 5 team in the East Region.

The Devils outrebounded Bloomfield 48-35 and limited the Bears to just 34.8 percent shooting (24-of-69).

University of the Sciences also made 23-of-28 free throws (82.1 percent), comparted to just 11-of-20 (55.0) for Bloomfield.

Brendan Crawford made 10-of-12 in the final 1:44 as part of a career performance to help seal the victory. The junior recorded his third career double-double with game-highs of 22 points and a career-best 13 rebounds.

Will Gregorits went a perfect 8-of-8 from the line and also had a double-double, his 12th this season, with 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting to move into 13th in program history with 1,468 career points.

Adding 11 boards, it was the senior's sixth game this season with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. He also led the Devils with five assists.

Paddy Casey was also in double-figures with 14 points, tying his career-high with four 3-pointers on seven attempts.

Tanner Kerr made all four of his free throw attempts en route to six points, to go along with five rebounds and three assists.

Flo Da-Silva contributed six points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals.

The game was played within a single possession, with six lead changes and four ties, for the first 17 minutes.

With Bloomfield taking the second of its game-high three-point leads, 18-15, with 6:12 to play in the first half, Gregorits scored four straight points to give USciences a lead it would not relinquish.

Casey then made back-to-back 3-pointers – the second coming with 2:16 showing -  to cap off 10 unanswered for a 25-18 advantage, helping the Devils take a 27-22 lead into the locker room.

Bloomfield (22-7) could only get as close as two in the second half, 29-27, 3:44 out of the break.

University of the Sciences responded with a 9-2 run, with all points scored by Crawford and Gregorits, taking a two-possession lead for good midway through the stretch when Gregorits made 2-of-2 foul shots to make the score 34-29 with 14:39 remaining.
