BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The University of the Sciences men's basketball team put forward an impressive offensive display, but the Devils were plagued by turnovers in their season-opening 110-99 loss at Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Harvey Hubbel Gymnasium.
The 99 points were USciences' most since putting up 104 at Southern Connecitut State on Dec. 20, 2015, while the Devils' 31 made free throws were their most in the last seven-plus seasons.
University of the Sciences' 25 assists were also its most since it had 25 at Chestnut Hill on Dec. 19, 2017.
The Devils outshot Bridgeport, making 52.6 percent from the field (30-of-57) while holding UB to 46.8 percent (37-of-79).
Bridgeport forced 24 USciences turnovers though, leading to a 32-11 edge in points off turnovers.
Paddy Casey went 13-for-17 from the free throw line en route to leading all players with 20 points, two shy of a career-high. His eight assists were a new career-best, and the sophomore also added four rebounds, a steal and a block.
Brendan Crawford was the only other Devil in double figures with 17 on 6-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 5-of-5 from the line.
Hathway made all three of his 3-point attempts and grabbed a team and career-high five boards, while Rodman set new career-bests with four assists and three rebounds.
Hoffman added four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.
University of the Sciences scored the first six points of the game and were leading as late as 15-14 7:19 into play, before Bridgeport scored eight consecutive points to take the lead for good.
The Devils did however cut what was at one point a 12-point deficit - 27-39 with 6:03 left in the first - down to three, when Crawford capped a 12-3 spurt with a three-point play to make the score 39-42 with 4:05 showing.
The Purple Knights had an immediate answer though, this time scoring 10 straight to begin a 19-6 run to end the half and take a 61-45 advantage into the locker room
USciences could never cut it to single digits in the second half, although the Devils did outscore Bridgeport 54-49 after the break.
