Eight University of the Sciences Student-Athletes Named to CACC Spring All- Academic Team

Martins, Rubin and Garcia Are Repeat Selections

New Haven, Conn. (June 3, 2009) – Eight student-athletes from the University of the Sciences were named to the 2010 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Spring All-Academic Team announced by the conference office. The eight athletes from the institution were among the 93 total student-athletes from the 14 conference schools earning a place on the list.

To qualify for the honor, recipients must have maintained at least a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average, participated in a Spring CACC sport, and been at least a sophomore academically and athletically. Among the conference honorees were 27 repeat selections while 14 student-athletes were named for the third time in their careers.

Six of the repeat selections came from the University of the Sciences, with three men's tennis players earning conference All-Academic honors for the second time.

Senior Ricardo Martins (Idegeio Pentagono/Sao Paolo, Brazil) is a physical therapy major who has completed his fourth year overall as part of the institution's six-year Doctor of Physical Therapy program., holding down a 3.56 g.p.a. Fellow senior Daniel Rubin (Neshaminy HS/Langhorne, Pa.) has completed his second professional year and fourth overall in the University's Doctor of Pharmacy program with a 3.54 grade point average. Junior Francisco Garcia (Don Cesar Gascon/Balcarce Buenos Aires, Argentina) rounds out the three men's tennis repeaters. Garcia, a computer science major, has an overall g.p.a. of 3.70. He also earned conference all-academic honors in the fall as a member of the Devils' cross country team.

Roger Van Sycoc (Palmyra Area High School/Palmyra, Pa.)  is the fourth member of the men's tennis team to be honored.  Van Sycoc is in his second year in the Doctor of Physical therapy program at the institution and currently has a 3.91 g.p.a.

Three members of the Devils softball team were also honored with senior Erin Degnan  (Gwynedd Mercy Academy/ Doylestown, Pa) earning the honor for the third time.

Degnan is a four year starter on the Devils softball team, earning five wins for the Devils as a pitcher this season while striking out a career best 65 batters. This spring, Degnan completed her second professional year and fourth overall in the university's Doctor of Pharmacy program while sporting a 3.52 grade point average. Erin finished her career with 205 carrer strikeouts, the third best total in program history.

Two USP softball team members earned CACC All-Academic Team honors for the second time. Senior Samantha Tu (Bensalem HS/Trevose, Pa.) is an occupational therapy major at the university and recently completed her fourth year in the institution's five-year Masters of Occupational Therapy program with an overall g.p.a. of 3.56. Junior Dayna Phillips (Cumberland Regional HS/Rosenhayn, N.J.) is a biology/pre-med major and sports a 3.74 g.p.a. Phillips was also recently named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team for women's softball.

Rounding out the eight Devils named to the team and earning CACC All-Academic recognition for the first time is sophomore Luke Peyton (Haddonfield High School/Haddonfield, N.J.). Peyton, a member of the men's baseball team recently completed his second year in the institution's doctor of Pharmacy program while producing a 3.76 g.p.a. 

The eight USP athletes earning CACC Spring All-Academic honors during the 09-10 season, join 12 others from the CACC Fall and Winter Academic Teams to give the Devils a total of 20 athletes honored this academic year. A total of 63 different student athletes from the University of the Sciences have earned CACC All-Academic honors a total of 108 times since the program began in 2004. Thirty-two of these 63 are repeat selections with 16 of those earning All-Academic honors three times and one earning All-Academic honors six times (two sports) over the past five-plus years.
