Men’s Tennis Team Competes at ITA East Regional Championship

The University of the Sciences men's tennis team experienced a modicum of success at last weekend's USTA/ITA East Regional Tennis Championship at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with all single student-athletes competing recording at least one win in either singles or doubles competition.

The competition featured 85 singles players and 40 doubles teams from nearly a dozen east region NCAA Division II schools and broken up into two singles and two doubles brackets.

It was the Devils doubles teams that recorded the most wins as David Kazekevich and Alvaro Vargas reached the quarterfinals of the "A" doubles bracket with an 8-4 win over Andre Pelligrino and Fabio Minami of Queens College before falling to top seed and eventual champions, Andrey Boldarev and Daniele Piludu of Concordia College, 8-3.  The two Concordia players later faced each other for the "A" Singles title with Boldarev coming out on top.

In the "B" doubles bracket, Billy Fine and Francsico Garcia had an opening round bye and advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-5 win over Jeramy Solema and Manual Ceniceros of Chestnut Hill College before losing in the quarters to Ken Scheiffer and Dan Sullivan of LeMoyne College, 8-5.  LeMoyne's Andy Gleason and Joe Persia defeated the Devils other doubles team in the "B" bracket, Josh Garcia and Roger Van Scyoc 8-1 in the opening round.

In singles competition, Kazekevich narrowly lost to Tomas Gadjusak of the University of the District of Columbia, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9) in the opening round of the "A" Singles bracket.  Vargas's "A" singles match against Juan Jose Arango of Southern New Hampshire University also went to a tiebreaker with Arango coming out on top 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8).

Josh Garcia and Van Scyoc were the two Devils who earned wins in the singles competition, with Garcia defeating Lalinda Jayatilleke of UDC 8-1 and Van Scyoc defeating Darryl Johnson of LeMoyne 8-4 in the opening round of the "B" doubles bracket.   Josh Garcia then lost to Alex Mukdaprokorn of Southern New Hampshire, 8-2 and VanScyoc fell to Bentley's Rodrigo Ribiero 8-2 in the round of 32.

Billy Fine and Francisco Garcia advanced to the round of 32 via byes before bowing out of the tournament with losses.  Fine lost to Sean Pahler of Merrimack 8-3 and Garcia lost to Liam Hoare, also of Merrimack, 8-2.

The Devils return to action with a road match against area rival Chestnut Hill College on Thursday September 23, 2010.
