Rams Defeat Devils in CACC Men’s Tennis Semi-Finals

The University of the Sciences men's tennis team's quest for a Central Atlantic Collegiate conference championship came to an end Tuesday afternoon as Philadelphia University defeated the Devils 5-2 at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in East Falls.

The Devils drop to 9-7 overall with the loss and await the possibility of a bid to the NCAA East Regional Championship.  Philadelphia University advances to the CACC Championship match against Concordia College on Thursday.  Chestnut Hill College is hosting the championship.

The Rams took the first point as Seppi Hutter and Tom McAvoy defeated Roger Van Scyoc and Paul Bedway at #3 doubles 8-0.  The Devils #1 doubles team of Alvaro Vargas and David Kazakevich evened the match at 1-1 with an 8-3 win over Adrian Torroella-Cruz and Manoli Sgouros.  Francisco Garcia and Bill Fine dropped their #2 doubles match to Kyle Burke and Ryan Christopher to give the Rams a 2-1 lead heading into singles competition.

Christopher and Sgouros boosted the Rams lead to 4-1 with wins over Fine and Garcia at #4 and #3 singles respectively.  Christopher won his match 6-0, 6-0 while Sgouros was a 6-1, 6-4 winner.  Kazakevich brought the Devils within two, 4-2 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Burke at #2 singles.  Hutter however closed out the match, defeating Joshua Garcia at #6 singles, 6-2, 6-0, making the final score 5-2.
