PHILADELPHIA – The University of the Sciences and the University of Pennsylvania have reached an agreement that will see the USciences men's and women's tennis programs practice and play matches at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers, located in Penn Park, for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
"This relationship is an excellent opportunity for the USciences tennis program as it provides an upgrade in facilities for our current and future student-athletes," said Dr. Marc Caserio, Ed.D, USciences Athletics Director. "Our student-athletes will now have the ability to practice and play their home matches at a state-of-the art facility in the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Centers. We are excited to begin what we hope is a long and mutually beneficial partnership."
Per pennathletics.com, the outdoor Hamlin Tennis Center – located in the southern portion of Penn Park - has been the home of Penn tennis since the facility opened in 2011. The Center features 12 all-weather courts that can be separated into sets of three or six, as well as stadium seating and an elevated area for spectators to watch matches.
The Hecht Tennis Center – located at the western edge of Penn Park - serves as the indoor home for Penn tennis. The Center features eight glare-free Devoe illuminated with well-placed Plexi Pave surfaces, and an observation deck for fans to view matches.
"Though I will always cherish the many wonderful memories made on the courts at McNeil Field, I am very excited for the new opportunities that await our tennis program at Penn Tennis Center," said Head Men's and Women's Tennis Coach Jay Brennan. "The tennis facility at UPenn is regarded as one of the NCAA's finest, and I am honored for the opportunity to utilize it as our new home for practices and matches."
University of the Sciences will play its first-ever match at the Hamlin Center on Monday, Sept. 10 when the women host Concordia at 4 p.m., two days opens after opening their season at the TCNJ Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 8.
That will be the first of five home matches for the women during their championship fall season, with two more scheduled during the spring, as their 2018-19 schedule was released in conjunction with the announcement.
The men's first home match at their new home will be on Friday, Sept. 21 when the Devils welcome NYIT for a 4 p.m. start, as part of a doubleheader with the women. That will be one of two home matches for the USciences men during their non-championship fall season, with seven more set to come during the spring.
