Farrell named to the Philadelphia Area All Academic Team
Philadelphia, Pa. (1/18/11) – University of the Sciences men's cross country runner Martin Farrell was amongst the seven male athletes named to the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Cross Country Team as announced on today.
The Philadelphia Area All-Academic Teams are voted on by the members of the Philadelphia Area Sports Information Directors Association (Philly-SIDA). To be eligible for selection, a student-athlete must be a sophomore academically and athletically, attend one of the 28 Philadelphia area colleges and universities and have a minimum grade point average of 3.20.
A pharmacy major, Farrell (Monsignor Bonner High School/Drexel Hill, Pa.) has earned Dean's List honors in six of his seven semesters and currently sports a 3.534 grade point average. Farrell has also been named to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Fall All-Academic Team in each of the past two years and was a 2009 Division II Athletic directors Association Academic Achievement Award winner. He has been a part of the last three USciences men's cross country teams that have earned USTFCCCA Division II All-Academic Team honors (2007-2009).
Farrell enjoyed a renaissance year for the Devils having missed the entire 2009 campaign with a stress fracture, leading the Devils to a fourth place finish while earning All-Conference honors at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference championship meet. Marty place 13th overall at the conference meet with a time of 29:16, just four seconds off his fastest time ever on the current version of Belmont plateau's college course.
The junior captain was the Devils top runner in three regular season races, including the Goldey-Beacom Fall Classic where he placed second overall with a time 28:51 as the Devils won their first invitational title since the 2007 season. Farrell ran a personal-best 8,000-meter time of 28:25 at this year's Paul Short Invitational in Lehigh, Pennsylvania.
Joining Farrell on the Area All Academic Team is Area Performer of the Year Anders Hulleburg of Haverford College along with Joseph Carpenter (also from Haverford); Tyler Dye (Philadelphia University); Matthew Millenhall (Villanova); Jeff Terebey (Rowan University) and Jon Warren (Rutgers-Camden). Farrell is just the second USciences men's cross country runner to be named to the team since the teams were instituted back in 2005, joining Joseph Holton '08 who was part of that inaugural 2005 team.
The former Monsignor Bonner High School athlete recently completed his third season of competition for the Devils. Farrell is majoring in pharmacy while pursuing a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and is on track to graduate from the University of the Sciences in 2013.
