CHEYNEY, Pa. – Freshman Jonathan Epstein won the first annual Cheyney University Running of the Wolves, and four other Devils – all freshmen making their collegiate debut in the 5k - placed in the top-nine to help the University of the Sciences men's cross country team capture its first team title since 2010 on Saturday.
USciences easily won the team title with 25 points, beating out second place Penn State Brandywine by 14 points. The Devils had not won a team title since the 2010 Goldey-Beacom Invitational.
Coming off the capturing the season's first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Rookie of the Week award on Tuesday, Epstein made a statement by beating out the field of 28 by over 30 seconds. He navigated the 5K course in 17:12.3 to win his first career individual title in just his second collegiate race.
Freshmen Christopher Cardace and Ryan Ward each earned top-five finishes by crossing third and fourth with respective times of 18:12.39 and 18:38.7, while freshmen Matthew Weiner and Matthew Connolly rounded out USciences' scoring by crossing back-to-back in eighth and ninth. The two finished in 19:33.8 and 19:58.7, respectively.
USciences takes next weekend off before returning to action for the Goldey-Beacom Fall Classic at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22.
