Three Shooters Named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s At-Large Team
Philadelphia (May 19, 2010) – University of Sciences in Philadelphia mixed rifle team member Courtney Cavalieri and women's rifle team members Nicole Churchill and Carrie Kwok have been named to the 2009-10 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large Team. The three shooters are amongst the 10 student-athletes selected to the team by sports information directors of the 28 area institutions in the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
Cavalieri (Highland High School/Highland, N.Y.), a fifth year student in the university's Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD.) program, earned her second consecutive Philadelphia Area All-Academic team honors this year and caps off a second straight year of earning three major academic honors. In 2010 Courtney was named to the College Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) for the fourth straight year and the Mid-Atlantic Rifle conference (MAC) All-Academic Team for the second straight year. Cavalieri has a 3.270 grade point average.
The senior shooter was the mixed rifle team captain during the 2009-2010 season and was the #3 shooter on the team with a smallbore average of 544 and an air rifle average of 553.56. Cavalieri fired a smallbore career high of 557 against Virginia Military Institute and an air rifle season high of 561 against Coast Guard. The Devils won both matches.
The Highland, New York native has earned Dean's list honors seven times and was the MAC Smallbore Shooter of the Month for February 2009. She was a member of USP's Student Government Association from 2007-2009 and is a co-editor of The Elixir- USP's literary magazine.
Churchill (Pocono Mountain West High School/Albrightsville, Pa.) served as captain of the women's rifle team in 2009-2010 and was the leading shooter on the team. Like Cavalieri, Nicole was also named to the CRCA All-Academic Team and the MAC All Academic Team this season. In her fourth year academically, Churchill has a 3.729 g.p.a. as a pharmacy major. The junior shooter led the women's team in both guns with a 521.67 air rifle average and a 474.09 smallbore average. Nicole shot a career high of 539 in air rifle earlier this season against Navy.
The Albrightsville, Pennsylvania has earned Dean's list honors five times and was a member of the USP women's team that won the MAC Marksman Division Air Rifle Championship in 2008. Churchill also competed in the MAC championships in 2009 and 2010.
Kwok (Herricks High School/New Hyde Park, N.Y.) is in her third year academically at the University of the Sciences and is a biological sciences/medical technology major. Carrie has made Dean's List in each of her first five semesters and has a g.p.a. of 3.536. She was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society in spring of 2008.
The New Hyde Park, New York native finished the season with a 389.00 smallbore average and a 467.71 air rifle average while shooting her career highs in both guns at the NRA sectional match in late January (440 in smallbore and 503 in air rifle).
Cavalieri, Churchill and Kwok are joined on the 2009-10 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women's At-Large team by fencers Emma Buckingham of Haverford College (Performer of the Year winner) and Danielle Kamis of the University of Pennsylvania; West Chester University gymnast Alli Aquila Penn squash players Christina Matthias and Sydney Scott; Neumann ice hockey player Jessica Schroeder and Swarthmore badminton player Maithili Parikh.
