Devils Fall to Akron and John Jay

The University of the Sciences mixed rifle team dropped a pair of home matches on Saturday losing to University of Akron and John Jay College at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range. 

Akron defeated the Devils 4605-4284 while John Jay narrowly edged Sciences 4287-4284.   The Devils did pick up a Mid Atlantic rifle Conference (MAC) win, defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay in smallbore 2135-2077.  John Jay was a 2210-2149 victor though in air rifle.   Sciences lost both guns in MAC competition, losing in smallbore 2278-2135 and in air rifle, 2327-2149. 

The Devils are now 4-5 overall and 4-3 in MAC smallbore matches and 3-3 in MAC Air Rifle matches. 

Brad Driscoll led the Devils in both guns, shooting 570 (98, 98 prone; 92, 93 stand; 93, 96 kneel) in smallbore and 577 (95, 96, 95, 95, 98, 98) in air rifle.  Driscoll was followed by freshman Sam Fowler, who shot 544 (97, 97 prone; 87, 83 stand; 88, 92 kneel) in smallbore and 551 (89, 89, 91, 93, 95, 94) in air rifle.  Driscoll's smallbore score was the second highest score in the match. 

Timothy Wu and Allen Whisler rounded out the Devils four scorers in both guns.  Wu shot 527 (94, 95, prone; 75, 85 stand; 93, 85 kneel) in smallbore and 514 (88, 88, 81, 88, 84, 85) in air rifle.   Whisler had a 507 (89, 76, 82, 87, 87, 86) score in air rifle and a 494 (92, 93 prone; 73, 81 stand; 81, 74 kneel) in smallbore. 

Akron's Sarah Benjamin turned in the high smallbore score of the match, shooting 578, followed by Ryan Stein's 570.  David Brummond and Adam Auclair rounded out the Zips scorers with marks of 567 and 563.  Akron's four scoring air rifle shooters had the top four scores in the match, led by Chelsey Frink's 585.  Brittany Jones followed with 582; Brummond, 581; and Benjamin 579. 

John Jay was paced by Stephen Zawislak in smallbore (566) and Jenna Hansen (566) in air rifle.  Hansen also shot 536 in smallbore while Zawislak recorded an air rifle score of 565.  Will Finch IV (500) and Kerri Hansen (475) rounded out the Bloodhounds four smallbore scorers, while Kerri Hansen and Christian Arguello recorded air rifle scores of 531 and 548 respectively. 

The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 13, 2010 when they host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in an MAC match at the Colonel Shea Rifle Range starting at 11:00 a.m.
