Rifle Team Defeat Hofstra in Home Opener
The University of the Sciences mixed rifle team returned to the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range for their home opener on Saturday as they defeated Hofstra University 4208-2920.
The win improves the Devils overall record to 3-2. In Mid-Atlantic rifle Conference (MAC) matches, Sciences is now 2-1 in smallbore and 3-0 in air rifle.
Sophomore Brad Driscoll again led the Devils in both guns, firing a 570 (99, 99 prone; 93, 88 stand; 97, 94 kneel) in smallbore and a 572 (94, 96, 96, 96, 95, 95) in air rifle. Freshman Sam Fowler was the Sciences #2 shooter with a score of 545 (98, 100 prone; 85, 90 stand; 87, 85 kneel) in smallbore and 557 (92, 92, 93, 92, 93, 95) in air rifle.
Tim Wu finished as the Devils #3 shooter on the afternoon with a smallbore score of 499 (96, 90 prone) 78, 75 stand; 78, 82 kneel) and an air rifle score of 513 (81, 86, 88, 82, 87, 89). Freshman Maura Andrews rounded out the Devils scorers in smallbore, firing a career-high 470 (92, 86 prone; 73, 71 stand; 70, 78 kneel). Senior Allen Whisler was the Devils final scorer in air rifle with a score of 482 (79, 84, 81, 82, 86, 70).
In addition sophomore Kyle Leath turned in a career-high effort in both guns, shooting 454 (88, 90 prone; 66, 74 stand; 59, 77 kneel) in smallbore and a 507 (86, 81, 86, 82, 86, 86) in air rifle.
Hofstra was led by Peter DellaVecchia in smallbore, shooting 406 and Francesco Fanelli in air rifle (486).
The Devils will take to the road for their next match, taking on the U.S.Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland on October 9, 2010.
