Mixed Rifle Team Splits Season Opening Match

The University of the Sciences Mixed Rifle Team opened their 2010-11 season in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday, taking on teams from The Citadel and host Virginia Military Institute and coming away with a split against the four teams. 

Sciences defeated VMI's women's team 4077-3709 and the Citadel's women's team 4077-3953.  The Devils lost to the Citadel's men's team 4347-4077 and to VMI's mixed team 4160-4077. 

The matches against the two VMI teams were also Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference matches.  In smallbore the Devils scored 2002 points, losing to the VMI mixed team (2085) but defeating the VMI women (1829).   In air rifle the VMI mixed team and the Devils shot identical 2075 scores while the VMI women shot 1880.

Sophomore Brad Driscoll had the highest smallbore and air rifle scores amongst all 24 shooters competing.  Driscoll shot 567 (99, 99 prone; 93, 90 stand; 96, 90 kneel) in smallbore and 576 (95, 96, 96, 96, 97, 96) in air rifle.   Freshman Sam Fowler was the Devils #2 shooter, making his intercollegiate debut with scores of 520 (96, 94 prone; 88, 78 stand; 82, 82 kneel) and 543 (89, 87, 94, 90, 94, 89) in air rifle. 

Rounding out the Devils four scorers were junior Tim Wu and freshman Maura Andrews.  Wu shot 470 (84, 88 prone; 72, 68 stand; 80, 78 kneel) in smallbore and 478 (75, 81, 86, 78, 79, 79) in air rifle.  Andrews, also making her intercollegiate debut, shot 445 (80, 92 prone; 67, 66 stand; 62, 78 kneel) and 478 (78, 83, 76, 75, 85, 81) in air rifle. 

The Citadel men's team was led by Winston Dorian (550 smallbore; 561 air rifle) while the Citadel women were led by Julia McCullohs (500 smallbore) and Allison Hayes (550 air rifle).  VMI's mixed team was led by Josh Gilliand (530 smallbore) and Josh Lawrence (532 air rifle) and their women's team was paced by Marie Mallet in both guns (484 smallbore, 509 air rifle).

The Mixed Rifle Team returns to action for their home opener on Saturday, October 2, 2010 when they host Hofstra University at the Colonel Shea Rifle Range in Alumni Hall.
