Spina Named CACC Softball Rookie of the Week
New Haven, Conn. (4/5/10) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball pitcher Courtney Spina (Garnet Valley H.S./Thornton, Pa.) has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 4, 2010.
In her only appearance this week, Spina threw her second complete game shutout of the season, out-dueling All-American and CACC Pitcher of the Year Diana Sansevera of Georgian Court University as the University of the Sciences women's softball team earned their first win over the Lions since the 2005 season, 1-0 in eight innings.
The freshman hurler Spina struck out nine batters, one off her career high and did not issue a single walk. Courtney allowed just three runners to reach scoring position, one in the first and two in the fourth. In both instances the Lions failed to score. Spina closed out the game in the final two innings by striking out three of the last four Georgian Court batters.
In recording her second shutout of the season, spina becomes just the ninth softball pitcher in school history to record two or more shutouts in one season. This season, Courtney has appeared in seven games as a pitcher, recording a 3-3 record with five complete games and a team leading 45 strikeouts in 40 innings pitched. She has held opposing batters to a .203 average and has an earned run average of 2.97.
Spina is in her first season of play for the Devils. The former Garnet Valley High School All-Star is a pharmacy major in the institution's Doctor of Pharmacy program.
