Summers Named CACC Softball Rookie of the Week
New Haven, Conn. (4/12/10) – University of the Sciences in Philadelphia women's softball outfielder Erin Summers has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week for the week ending April 11, 2010.
In eight games this week, Summers (Pitman High School/Pitman, N.J.) set or tied three school records while batting .524 on the week with four home runs and 12 RBI.
The freshman outfielder opened the week with a record setting performance in the Devils doubleheader sweep of Wilmington University on Monday. In Sciences opening game 9-0 win, Summers tied a school record with two home runs in the game. Erin finished the game batting 3-for-3 with the two home runs, two runs scored, a stolen base and four RBI. In the nightcap, Summers belted another blast, giving her three total home runs for the doubleheader, a new school record. She also drove in four runs to help the Devils cause in the 7-3 win, giving her a total of eight RBI in the doubleheader, also a new school record.
Summers followed her record breaking performance with a hit in the opening game of Tuesday's doubleheader against Millersville. Erin added her fourth home run in as many games in the nightcap and capped her day with a double before leaving the game after tweaking her ankle sliding into third base.
After resting the ankle and not playing against Chestnut Hill, Summers returned to action on Friday and showing no signs of the injury went 2-for-2 in the opener with a sacrifice fly and two RBI and 1-for-3 in the nightcap, extending her hitting streak to seven games. The streak ended the next day when Summers went 0-2 and was hit with a pitch in the opener at Concordia College.
For the week, Summers had 11 hits in 21 at-bats, with four home runs and a double to produce a slugging percentage of 1.123 and an on-base percentage of .522. In the field Erin had nine chances without a single error and threw out a runner while catching in game two against Millersville.
The former Pitman High School softball star currently leads the Devils (13-13) with a .426 batting average, four home runs and 14 RBI in 23 games played. Summers is third on the team with 26 hits and second on the team with 13 runs scored. Erin is a pharmacy major in the institution's Doctor of Pharmacy program.
