Caldwell Shuts Out and Sweeps Devils

The University of the Sciences women's softball team was shut out twice by Caldwell College 12-0, and 6-0 Friday afternoon in Caldwell, New Jersey.

The two losses drop the Devils record to 7-23 overall and 5-11 in Central Atlantic Collegiate conference games. Caldwell improves to 18-14 overall and 8-4 in league play.  The women's softball team has now been shut out 11 times this season, their highest total since getting 'goose-egged' a school record 14 times in 2006.

The Cougars pounced on Devils starting pitcher Courtney Spina right from the opening pitch, scoring six runs in the first inning of the opener.  Dia Cascone led off the inning with a home run, setting the tone for things to come.  Three more runs scored in the third to make the score 9-0.  The Cougars scored three more in the fourth, these off releiever Julie Shaw to make the final score 12-0.  The game ended after five innings.

Janelle Rodriguez had two of the Devils four hits in the opener including a double.  Gabrielle Adams also added a double and Courtney Corcoran a single.  Spina's record fell to 4-9 with the loss.

A five-run third inning proved to be the undoing of Devils starter Gina Murray in the nightcap as the Cougars went on to win 6-0.  Murray (1-5) pitched just three innings, giving up five runs on seven hits. Haley Kavelak, Laura Pietropola and Erin Summers each had two singles for the Devils.

The Devils return to action on Saturday, April 16, 2011 when they host Bloomfield College at McNeil field.  First pitch is 1:00 p.m.
