Devils Split with Eagles
Erin Summers drove in both runs as the University of the Sciences salvaged a split with Post University, defeating the Eagles 2-1 in the second game of their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday at McNeil Field in Philadelphia.
The Devils had dropped the opener 10-3. With the split, Sciences record improves to 9-29 overall and 7-17 in league games. Post is now 23-22 overall and 15-11 in CACC contests.
Summers had two of the Devils three hits in the contest, getting a single in the first inning and another in the second. Post took a 1-0 lead in the first before Sciences struck in the second. Kerrianne Jones walked with one out and two batters later Dayna Phillips delivered a two-out single. Gabrielle Adams loaded the bases for Summers who laced a single to right field, scoring Phillips and Jones and giving the Devils a 2-1 lead.
That was all the offense the Devils needed to make starting pitcher Courtney Spina a winner. Spina threw a complete game, allowing eight hits while striking out three and not walking a single batter.
In the opener, the Devils jumped out to a 3-0 lead in their first at-bat. Phillips walked and Adams singled to start the inning. Summers singled to score Phillips SamanthaLou Anastasio followed with a sacrifice with Adams subsequently scoring on an infield error. Haley Kavelak then singled to score Summers.
The Eagles soared back with a nine-run third inning, sending 13 batters to the plate and getting nine hits in the process with Brianna Davis and Lianna May each recording two doubles in the inning. Davis drove in three runs in the inning. Post added another run in the seventh to make the final score 10-3.
Devils pitcher Gina Murray took the loss, giving up nine runs, only two of which were earned in three innings of work. Julie Shaw pitched the final four innings, giving up one run on four hits.
The Devils return to action on Sunday, May 1, 2011 when they host Holy Family University in a rescheduled (5th time) conference doubleheader at McNeil field beginning at 10:00 a.m.
