    Philadelphia, Pa., (May 17, 2013) – University of the Sciences athletes Courtney Spina and Kristin Waters were announced as the 2013 recipients of the first Paul E. Klimitas Honorary Scholarship. Established in 2012, the Paul E. Klimitas Honorary Scholarship bestows two awards of $1,000 annually to extraordinary intercollegiate athletes who demonstrate “strong commitment to excellence in the classroom, in athletic competition, and in the community.”

    Courtney Spina become the Devils all-time strikeout leader while Erin Summers broke the school’s single season stolen base record as the University of the Sciences rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Philadelphia University 4-3 on Haley Kavelak’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning in their second game at the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Championship Tournament in Lakewood, New Jersey.

    It was the final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday; a day when members of the University of the Sciences women’s softball team got to show their appreciation to the five seniors who have been a instrumental part of their success, not only this season but in all four seasons they have played. The seniors in turn responded in a big way, setting up and producing a pair of walk-off wins over Felician College by identical 3-2 scores.

    The University of the Sciences women’s softball team recorded a pair of shutouts as they defeated Nyack College 9-0 in five innings and 1-0 on Saturday in Nyack, New York. Courtney Spina and Molly Walter combined to pitch a shutout in the first game, getting home runs from Erin Summers and SamanthaLou Anastasio as the Devils offense push nine runs across the plate in the five inning rout.
