Devils Set Records for Wins with a Pair of Shutouts over Nyack College

The University of the Sciences women's softball team recorded a pair of shutouts as they defeated Nyack College 9-0 in five innings and 1-0 on Saturday in Nyack, New York.

Courtney Spina and Molly Walter combined to pitch a shutout in the first game, getting home runs from Erin Summers and SamanthaLou Anastasio as the Devils offense push nine runs across the plate in the five inning rout.

The Devils went on to complete the two-game sweep with a 1-0 win behind Cassie Lapotsky in the second game.   With the sweep the Devils improve to 18-12 overall and 14-6 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play. In the process the softball team set school records for most wins in a season (18) and most conference wins in a season (14), breaking the marks of 16 overall wins, set back in 1990 and tied last year and 13 CACC wins which was set last season.

The two shutouts gives the softball team a total of eight shutouts on the season, a new school record.

Spina (Garnet Valley HS/Thornton, Pa.) allowed just two hits while striking out three without issuing a walk, evening her record at 7-7 on the season.  Walter (Hempfield HS/Columbia, Pa.) pitched a scoreless fifth, retiring the Warriors in order.

The Devils gave Spina all the run support she would really need with a single run in the first inning as Devon Debellis scored from third on a squeeze bunt from Katie Dickson (Kingsway Regional HS/Swedesboro, N.J.).   Anastasio (St. Joseph by the Seas HS/Staten Island, N.Y.) made the score 3-0 with a two-run home run in the second.  Two more runs scored in the third as Haley Kavelak (Middletown HS/Middletown, Del.) tripled  to lead off the inning and scored on Dickson's RBI single. Three batters later Dickson scored as Jackie Keifer (Archbishop Prendergast HS/Aldan, Pa.) delivered a one-out RBI single.

Summers led off the fourth inning with her second home run of the season, making the score 6-0.  Dickson doubled and later scored on an outfield error and Kerrianne Jones (West Chester East HS/West Chester, Pa.) added an RBI single to score Gabrielle Adams (Chichjester HS/Aston, Pa.) giving the Devils an 8-0 lead.  Summers doubled in the fifth and later scored on Kavelak's RBI single, providing the final run in the 9-0 win.

Spina retired the Warriors in order in the fourth and Walter came on to pitch a 1-2-3 fifth inning to secure the combined shutout win.

Lapotsky (North Schuylkill HS/Ashland, Pa.) recorded her fourth shutout of the season in game two, becoming just the third Devils player to toss four or more shutouts in one season.  The freshman pitcher scattered six hits while striking out four and not walking a batter.  Cassie improves to 10-4 on the season and also becomes the fourth pitcher in program history to win 10 or more games in a single season.

The Devils got their only run in the second inning as Nicole Rivera (Our Lady of Mercy HS/Pittsford, N.Y.) walked to start the action and moving to second on an infield ground out.  The freshman designated player then came around to score on a pair of wild pitches, giving the Devils their only run of the game.

Lapotsky allowed just two hits through the first four innings.  In the fifth she gave up a single and a double with one out, putting two runners in scoring position.  A strikeout and an infield groundout ended the threat.  Lapotsky allowed just two more singles the rest of the way to earn the win.

The women's softball team returns to action on Monday for a non-conference doubleheader at West Chester University.
