Devils Defeat Warriors for Second Win of Season
Alyssa Hamm scored 19 points and Caitlin Shaw added 15 as the University of the Sciences women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 68-52 win over visiting East Stroudsburg University Tuesday night at the Bobby Morgan Arena.
The Devils improve to 2-2 overall. East Stroudsburg falls to 1-2.
Hamm connected on eight of 11 shots from the field, including a 3-for-4 effort from three point range enroute to her 25 points. Shaw made five of 12 shots from the field and was 5-for-9 from the charity stripe to total 15 points. Marissa Chesnavich added ten points. Shaw led the devils with 7 rebounds while Hamm, Becca Ruggear and Sarah Hickman added six apiece. Colleen Christian had four assists and two blocked shots.
Brittany Mcclain was the lone Warrior player in double figures, scoring 19 points on a 7-for-16 shooting effort from the field
Shaw and Hamm combined for 25 of the Devils 41 second half points as they overcame a two-point halftime deficit. Trailing 29-27 at the break, Sciences opened the final 20 minutes with a 13-2 spurt to take a nine-point lead 40-31 at the 15:10 mark, with Shaw scoring eight of the 13 points and Hamm the other five. The Devils lead was seven, 46-39 at the 10:45 mark when a 17-4 run blew the game open and gave Sciences a 63-43 lead with 3:16 left. a layup by Mcclain cut the lead back to 18, but the devils converted on three of four three throws to boost their lead to its apex, 66-45 with 2:14 left. The Warriros did close out the game with a 7-2 spurt to make the final margin 16, 68-52.
The devils made 15 of 30 shots in the final 20 minutes of play, overcoming a dismal 9-for-31 effort in the first half to finish the game shooting 39.3% (24-61). ESu also took 61 shots in the game, making just 20 field goals (32.8%). Both teams had four three pointers and both teams finished with 44 rebounds. sciences did have better control of the ball, committing just 16 turnovers (15 assists) while ESU committed 23 (8 assists)
The Devils return to action for the final home game of the fall semester on Saturday, December 4, 2010 when they will host Kutztown University at the Bobby Morgan Arena. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
