Christian Equals Three-Point Mark as Devils Win Streak Now Stands at Thirteen.

"In case you haven't noticed, and judging from the attendance, you probably haven't, the Indians have managed to win a few games." — Harry Doyle, aka Bob Uecker, in the movie Major League

Well folks, in case you haven't noticed, and judging by the attendance, you probably haven't, the University of the Sciences women's basketball team has quietly produced a 13-game winning streak and stands on the verge of hosting a CACC basketball playoff game for the first time in five years.

In tonight's action, Colleen Christian tied the school record for three-point field goals in a game as well as her career high as the University of the Sciences women's basketball team ran their winning streak to 13 games, defeating Washington Adventist  78-33 in a non-conference game Thursday night at the Bobby Morgan arena in Philadelphia.

The Devils are now 19-4 overall. The Team has quietly compiled a impressive 11-2 home record including eight straight conference wins.

Christian (Central Bucks South HS/Warrington, Pa.) dialed it up seven times from long distance enroute to equaling her career high of 25 points.  She finished the game shooting 9-14 from the field (7-12 3FG) while dishing out four assists and grabbing three rebounds.  Becca Ruggear  (Oxford Area HS/Oxford, Pa.) also tied her career high, making 10 of 15 shots from the field along with a pair of free throws for 22 points.  The sophomore forward also grabbed nine rebounds.  Marissa Chesnavich (Bishop O'Reilly HS/Pittston, Pa.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds  to go along with her seven points and two blocks while Alyssa Hamm (Academy Park HS/Sharon Hill, Pa.) and Melissa Rotz (Central Dauphin HS/Harrisburg, Pa.)  added five and four assists respectively.   Hamm also became the fifth player in school history to record 100 career three-point field goals, with a '3-ball' to open the game, joining teammate Christian who reached the mark five days earlier against Caldwell College.  Sarah Hickman (Wilmington Christian School/Newark, Del.) added nine points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Rebecca Lee led Washington Adventist with 14 points while Vanessa Rice had ten rebounds.

The game was not much of a contest as the three-pointer from Hamm and another from Christian set the tone early as Sciences jumped out to an 8-0 lead and extended it to 18-5 and later 28-13 by the end of the period.

The Devils tightened up on the defense and improved on their offense in the final twenty minutes opening the period with a 19-4 spurt to pretty much put this one out of reach, taking a 47-17 lead with 12:26 left. Another run followed, a 16-6 effort to boost the lead to 40 63-23 with 7:09 left.  Sciences got nine points from Ruggear and another five from Christian to highlight the run.  After a couple of baskets by the Lady Shock, Christian completed her evening with her sixth 'triple' of the half (also a school record0 and her seventh of the game at the 5:33 mark.  The seven three-point field goals equal the mark set back in 2000 by Jeanine Jones against Baptist Bible College.  Sciences finished out the half with a 12-6 run to make the final score 78-33, outscoring WAU 50-20 in the period.

The Devils did not commit a single turnover in the second half and finished the game with eight, their lowest total of the season and allowing the team to turn in an excellent 24/8 assist turnover ratio.  The Lady Shock had 20 turnovers on the night (eight assists).  Sciences outshot (47.8%-24.1%) and outrebounded (44-39) WAU and made seven more baskets from  beyond the arc, 9-2.  Neither team was impressive from the free throw line (Sciences 5-11, WAU 5-10).

The women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday, February 19, 2011 when they host Bloomfield college at the Bobby Morgan Arena.  The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
