University of the Sciences freshman guard Brianne Traub has been named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Year in voting done by the league's 14 coaches and announced by the conference office today. Traub was also voted on to the CACC All-conference Team as a second team selection.
Philadelphia University's Christine Wooding was named CACC Player of the Year. Steve Fagan of Felician College was named CACC Coach of the Year and Nyack College won the CACC Team Sportsmanship Award.
Traub (Eastern Christian High School/Wayne, N.J.) earned CACC Rookie of the Week honors a record nine times this season. Brianne enjoyed a successful rookie campaign which saw her leading the team in scoring, rebounding and steals.
The freshman guard has started in all 27 games for the Devils, averaging 16.9 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.89 steals per game. Her 456 points is the most ever scored by a freshman in the 25-year history of the program and is the tenth highest single season point total recorded by a USciences women's basketball player. She is just the sixth women's basketball player in school history to record 450 or more points in a season. Traub has reached double figures in scoring in 25 of the Devils 27 games and ranks fifth in the conference in scoring average, tenth in steals and 12th in free throw percentage (74.3%)
In addition to Traub breaking the freshman record for points in a season, she also broke the freshman record for free throws made and attempted and scoring average. Brianne has made 139 free throws on the season out of 187 attempts to produce her 74.3% shooting average. Her 139 free throws also ranks her 20th on the Devils all-time career list for free throws made.
Traub scored a career-high 27 points against Post University on December 10, 2011 and grabbed her career high rebound total of 11 against St. Thomas Aquinas College on November 12, 2011.
The former Eastern Christian High School athlete is in her first season of play for the University of the Sciences. At Eastern Christian Traub, scored a school record 2,158 points while averaging 22.5 points, 11.5 rebounds and four steals per games over her high school career. She earned All-State Second Team honors twice, was a two-time All-State Non-Public First Team honoree and a two-time North Jersey Player of the Year. Traub is a pharmacy major in the institution's Doctor of Pharmacy program.
