Devils Hold on to Defeat Rams

The cross-town rivalry between the University of the Sciences and Philadelphia women's basketball programs got a healthy dose of excitement on Saturday as the Devils held off a late rally to defeat the Rams 67-62 in overtime at the Bobby Morgan Arena. 

USciences improves to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games.  Philadelphia drops to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in league play. 

Brianne Traub (Eastern Christian HS/Wayne, N.J.) led the Devils with 23 points and ten rebounds, her second career double-double.  Carolyn Edwards (St. Basil's Academy/Huntington Valley, Pa.) and Becca Ruggear (Oxford Area HS/Oxford, Pa.) added 12 points apiece.  Isabella Ross (Central HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) came off the bench to grab nine rebounds.  Elsebeth Birman (St. John's College HS/Silver Spring, Md.) had a game high seven assists. 

The Lady Rams put three players in double figures led by Stephanie Agger's 17 points.  Christine Wooding added 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.  Kristen Blye added 10 points.  Agger led Philadelphia with four assists. 

The Devils cruised to an comfortable seven point halftime lead and increased the lead to double-digits as the second half commenced.   Sciences led by ten 40-30 with 16:09 left when the Rams produced a 10-4 run to climb back within four 44-40 at the 9:51 mark.  Two free throws by Kaityn Schmid (Howell Area HS/Howell, N.J.) put the Devils back up by six 46-40 with eight minutes left but the Rams scored the next seven points to take their first lead since midway through the first half, 47-46 with 5:26 left.  Over the next 4:13 the lead changed hands five times with neither team leading by more than a point. A free throw from Ruggear gave the Devils a two-point lead 53-51 with just six seconds left but Agger's layup with 1.4 left on the clock tied the game at 53-53 sending the game in overtime. 

Ross opened the overtime with a layup and Agger and Stephanie Morris followed with two free throws apiece to put the Rams up by two, 57-55 with 3:02 left in the extra period.    A triple from Traub  put the lead back into the Devils hands for the moment 58-57 before Morris put the Rams back on top 59-58.  Agger's layup with 1:16 left gave the Rams a 61-59 lead but again the Devils knocked down a three-point field goal, this one coming at the hands of Edwards, making the score 62-61 with 55 seconds left.   A free throw tied the score again at 62-62.  Ruggear made two free throws and Traub connected on three of four from the charity stripe in the final ten seconds to seal the win 67-62. 

Shooting wise, both teams made 22 field goals with the Rams holding the slight shooting edge (37.3%-36.1%).  Both teams made 17 free throws, again with the edge to the Rams (65.4%-60.7%).   One of the big differences was the Devils connecting on six three-pointers (6-15, 40%) to the Rams one (1-5, 20%).   The Devils also held a huge advantage on the glass, outrebounding Philadelphia 52-35.  A season high 24 turnovers (16 assists) by the Devils led to 22 points by the Rams.  Conversely the Rams' 17 turnovers (12 assists) led to 12 points by the Devils. 

Sciences will have one more game before breaking for the Christmas holiday, traveling to East Stroudsburg on Monday, December 19, 2011.  Tip off is set for 4:00 p.m.
