Traub and Sylvester Spark Devils to Big Win over Eagles
Brianne Traub and Jessica Sylvester each had career games offensively as they combined for 44 points as the University of the Sciences Women's Basketball Team recorded a 79-65 win over Post University Saturday at the Bobby Morgan Arena in Philadelphia.
The Devils improve to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games. The Eagles fall to 2-7 and 0-3 in league play.
Traub (Eastern Christian HS/Wayne, N.J.) poured in a career-high 27 points, connecting on eight of 14 shots from the field and 10 of 12 from the free throw line. The freshman guard also had seven rebounds and a career-best four steals. Sylvester (Nazareth Academy/Trevose, Pa.) came off the bench to score 17 points (also a career high), shooting 6-for-10 from the field (3-5 3FG) and making a pair of free throws. Jess also had three assists. Becca Ruggear (Oxford Area HS/Oxford, Pa.) added 15 points (7-11 FG), six rebounds and two blocks. Elsebeth Birman (St. John's College HS/Silver Spring, Md.) had a game high seven assists to go along with six rebounds and nine points. Sarah Hickman (Wilmington Christian School/Newark, Del.) led the team with eight rebounds.
Sciences never trailed in the contest and used a 14-4 run early in the first half to take a 20-10 lead. Traub had nine of her 15 first half points during the run. The Eagles responded with an 11-5 spurt to pull within four 25-21 at the 5:42 mark before Sylvester started another Devils uprising with a '3-ball' at 5:24 as Sciences closed out the period on an 11-4 run to lead by 11, 36-25 at the break. Sciences' was a perfect 13-13 from the free throw line in the period.
A 10-6 spurt to open the second half extended the run to 21-10 and gave the devils a 15-point lead 46-31. Six straight points from Post cut the lead to single digits, 46-37 but the Devils pushed the margin right back to 15 with a free throw followed by a basket from Ruggear another free throw from Traub and a layup from Hickman, making the score 52-37 with 13:07 left. The Devils gradually pulled away as the game continued. Traub's traditional three-point play made the score 68-49 at the 5:34 mark and a basket from Carolyn Edwards (St. Basil's Academy/Huntington Valley, Pa.) at the 2:48 mark gave the Devils their biggest lead of the game, 21 points, 77-56. Post closed out the game with a 9-2 run making the final score 79-65.
For the second consecutive game and third time this season the Devils shot greater than 80% from the free throw line, making 20 of 24 (83.3%). Post was even better, making 18 of 19 (94.7%) from the charity stripe. The Devils have shot 75% or better from the free throw line in all seven games this season. Sciences finished the game with a strong shooting effort. After making just 30.3% (10-33) of their shots in the first half, the team shot 54.8% (17-31) in the second half to finish the contest shooting 42.2% (27.64). The Eagles finished the game shooting 32.8% (21-64). Both teams made five three-point field goals apiece. The Devils however won the battle of the boards, 46-37 and turned in a nifty 22 assist performance (13 turnovers). Post also had 13 turnovers (just nine assists) but the Devils took better advantage of the miscues scoring 20 points from them while Post managed just nine from the USciences miscues.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, December 17, 2011 when they host Philadelphia University in a CACC Southern Division showdown. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
