Devils Fall at Villanova
Playing an NCAA Division I program for the first time in their 25-year history, the University of the Sciences fought hard for 40 minutes but could not overcome Villanova University's outside shooting game as the Wildcats defeated the Devils 77-44 Saturday afternoon at the Pavilion in Villanova, Pennsylvania.
The Devils fall to 2-3 while Villanova improves to 4-2.
Brianne Traub (Eastern Christian HS/Wayne, N.J.) and Carolyn Edwards (St. Basil's Academy/Huntington Valley, Pa.) led the Devils with 11 points apiece while Elsebeth Birman (St. John's College HS/Silver Spring, Md.) added nine points and four assists. Traub led the team with six rebounds while Isabella Ross (Central HS/Philadelphia, Pa.) came off the bench to grab five boards. Kaitlyn Schmid (Howell Area HS/Howell, N.J.) had three steals and three assists.
Despite the actual score, the Devils played the host Wildcats tough, going hard for the entire 40 minutes. An early press by Villanova proved to be no problem for the young Devils squad as they hung tight in the early goings, trailing by just three 8-5. 'Nova used a 12-2 spurt to take a 20-7 lead and still led by 13, 26-13 before a 7-2 mini-run by the Devils cut the lead back to single digits. Traub and Edwards hit consecutive baskets to make the score 26-17. After a bucket from Nova, Edwards sank a '3-ball' to get the Devils within eight 28-20 with 4:47 left in the period. Villanova however closed out the period with a 14-4 spurt to take an 18-point lead at the break 42-24. The Devils did hold the Wildcats leading scorer Laura Sweeney to zero points in the period. The Wildcats put the game essentially out of reach by scoring the first eight points of the second half to lead 50-24. Sciences scored six in a row to pull within 20, 50-30 at the 15:22 mark but this was as close as they would get the rest of the way. Nova built the lead to 38 points before the devils shaved five points off in the final 3:48 to make the final margin 33.
Lindsey Kimmel led Villanova with 15 points while Emily Suhey added 12. Rachel Roberts had 10 points. Sweeney pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds and had four assists to go along with six points. Devon Kane and Jesse Carey had five assists apiece.
The Devils were outshot 46.9% to 33.3% from the field and from three point range 42.9%-28.6%. Nova also outrebounds the Devils 43-26 and committed three fewer turnovers 13-16. The game was relatively foul free with the Devils shooting 6-8 from the line and Villanova just 2-4. The Devils had committed just two fouls over the first 38½ minutes of play before finishing the game with five.
USciences returns to action on Tuesday, December 6, 2011 when they open Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a game at Goldey-Beacom College. Tipoff is 6:00 p.m.
