Women's Rifle Team Loses to John Jay and Akron
The University of the Sciences women's rifle team dropped a pair of home matches on Saturday losing to University of Akron and John Jay College at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range.
Akron defeated the Devils 4605-3814 while John Jay triumphed 4287-3814. The match also saw the Devils pick up a pair Mid Atlantic rifle Conference (MAC) losses in both guns, losing to the Bloodhounds of John Jay in smallbore 2077-1806 and 2210-2008 in air rifle. Sciences also lost both guns in MAC competition against Akron, falling in smallbore 2278-1806 and in air rifle, 2327-2008.
The Devils are now 1-8 overall and 1-6 in MAC smallbore matches and 1-5 in MAC Air Rifle matches.
Leading the Devils in smallbore was sophomore Olivia Brown. Brown soht 465 (89, 89 prone; 70, 58 stand; 82, 77 kneel). Senior Nicole Churchill followed with a score of 451 (63, 87 prone; 76, 74 stand; 76, 75 kneel). Shakira Chavis and Carrie Kwok rounded out the Devils four smallbore scorers. Kwok shot 446 (86, 90 prone; 60, 64 stand; 79, 67 kneel) while Chavis shot 444 (90, 95 prone; 52, 59 stand; 79, 69 kneel).
Churchill led the way for the women's team in air rifle, shooting 522 (85, 86, 88, 90, 88, 85) while Chavis shot 514 (84, 85, 87, 88, 86, 84). Brown and Shaina Kulp rounded out the Devils four air rifle scorers. Brown shot 489 (87, 83, 84, 79, 77, 79) while Kulp shot 483 (86, 79, 79, 70, 87, 82).
Akron's Sarah Benjamin turned in the high smallbore score of the match, shooting 578, followed by Ryan Stein's 570. David Brummond and Adam Auclair rounded out the Zips scorers with marks of 567 and 563. Akron's four scoring air rifle shooters had the top four scores in the match, led by Chelsey Frink's 585. Brittany Jones followed with 582; Brummond, 581; and Benjamin 579.
John Jay was paced by Stephen Zawislak in smallbore (566) and Jenna Hansen (566) in air rifle. Hansen also shot 536 in smallbore while Zawislak recorded an air rifle score of 565. Will Finch IV (500) and Kerri Hansen (475) rounded out the Bloodhounds four smallbore scorers, while Kerri Hansen and Christian Arguello recorded air rifle scores of 531 and 548 respectively.
The Devils return to action on Saturday, November 13, 2010 when they host Indiana University of Pennsylvania in an MAC match at the Colonel Shea Rifle Range starting at 11:00 a.m.
