Women’s Rifle Team Earns Two Wins in Week Two of Sectionals

The University of the Sciences women's rifle team came away with a pair of wins during the second week of the NRA Philadelphia Area Sectionals held at the Colonel William Shea Rifle range on the USciences campus. The Devils earned wins against Princeton University and Loyola College (Maryland) while losing to Penn State University and John Jay College. 

Sciences recorded an 1857-1843 win over Loyola College and an 1857-1808 win over Princeton University.   Both matches were smallbore only.  The Devils two losses were to Penn State (4367-3899) and John Jay College (4367-3899) 

Leading the way for the women's team in smallbore was Nicole Churchill.  Churchill shot a season-high 486 (94, 91 prone; 65, 78 stand; 76, 82 kneel) placing 18th amongst the 35 shooters competing in smallbore.  Shaina Kulp also had a season high score, shooting 471 (91, 92 prone; 61, 71 stand; 81, 75 kneel).  Olivia Brown and Carrie Kwok rounded out the Devils four scorers with marks of 451 (87, 84 prone; 63, 67 stand; 74, 76 kneel) and 449 (86, 76 prone; 68, 63 stand; 81, 75 kneel) respectively. 

Princeton's Xingxue Li led the tigers with the second highest smallbore score in the match shooting 560 while Penn State's Tonya Kocher was third with a score of 559. USciences mixed team member Brad Driscoll was the top smallbore shooter with 568 while Sam Fowler placed fourth (553).  The Nittany Lions three other shooters also finished in the top ten overall with Kyle Freeley placing fifth with a score of 551; Nicole McMahon eighth with a score of 537 and Nick Kussoff tenth with a score of 514.   

John Jay's Stephen Zawislak (548) and Jenna Hansen (525) were the Bloodhounds top two smallbore scorers, finishing seventh and ninth respectively.  Devonmarie Esposito of Loyola was the Greyhounds only shooter in the top ten with a smallbore score of 549, placing sixth amongst the 35 smallbore shooters. 

In air rifle, Churchill shot a career-high 537 (93, 89, 86, 91, 91, 87) to place eighth amongst all the air rifle shooters.  Kwok also shot a career high, placing 13th with a score of 511 (83, 88, 890, 86, 87, 87).  Shakira Chavis followed in 14th place with a score of 498 (77, 84, 86, 81, 84, 86) and Kulp was 15th with a season-high 496 (75, 84, 85, 86, 88, 78). 

Penn State's Kocher had the top air rifle score of 572, followed by Driscoll's 571. John Jay's Zawislak and Jenna Hansen were third and fourth respectively with Zawislak shooting 568 and Hansen 557.  Hansen's sister Kerri placed ninth for the Bloodhounds with a score of 535. Penn State's Freeley, McMahon and Kussoff joined Kocher amongst the top ten air rifle shooters with scores of 555, 546 and 533, placing fifth, seventh and tenth.  Sciences' mixed team shooter Fowler was sixth with a score of 551. 

The Devils return to action on Saturday, February 12, 2011 when they travel up to West Point, New York to shoot their NCAA qualifier match at the United State Military Academy.
