Womens Rifle Team Falls at VMI
The University of the Sciences Women's Rifle Team opened their 2010-11 season with losses against teams from The Citadel and host Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday.
The Devils lost to The Citadel men's team 4347-3651 and the Citadel women's team, 3953-3651. VMI's mixed and women's team's also defeated the Devils with the mixed team winning, 4160-3651 and the women 3709-3651.
The matches against the two VMI teams were also Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference matches. In smallbore the Devils scored 1772 points, losing to the VMI mixed team (2085) and the VMI women (1829). In air rifle the VMI mixed team scored 2075 and the VMI women 1880, while Sciences' women's team scored 1879.
Senior Nicole Churchill led the way for the Devils shooting 455 (84, 92 prone; 73, 62 stand; 73, 71 kneel) in smallbore and 509 (84, 84, 82, 86, 86, 87) in air rifle. Sophomore Olivia Brown was the Devils #2 shooter in smallbore, firing a score of 449 (80, 76 prone; 62, 75 stand; 80, 76 kneel). Brown also shot 439 (79, 85, 67, 74, 66, 68) in air rifle.
Senior Carrie Kwok and sophomore Shaina Kulp rounded out the Devils four scorers in smallbore. Kwok shot 438 (80, 80, prone; 61, 70 stand; 74, 73 kneel) while Kulp shot 430 (86, 85 prone; 55, 56 stand; 76, 72 kneel). Kwok and freshman Shakira Chavis were the Devils final two scorers in air rifle, with Kwok shooting 470 (66, 82, 83, 81, 78, 80) and Chavis, in her intercollegiate debut shot 461 (79, 69, 72, 77, 86, 78).
The Citadel men's team was led by Winston Dorian (550 smallbore; 561 air rifle) while the Citadel women were led by Julia McCullohs (500 smallbore) and Allison Hayes (550 air rifle). VMI's mixed team was led by Josh Gilliand (530 smallbore) and Josh Lawrence (532 air rifle) and their women's team was paced by Marie Mallet in both guns (484 smallbore, 509 air rifle).
The Women's Rifle Team returns to action for their home opener on Saturday, October 2, 2010 when they host Hofstra University at the Colonel Shea Rifle Range in Alumni Hall.
