Devils Picked Seventh in 2010 CACC Pre-Season Women's Tennis Poll

New Haven, Conn. (Aug. 25, 2010) - The University of the Sciences women's tennis team has been picked to finish seventh in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) pre-season poll which was released today. The league's nine head coaches conducted the voting.

In this year's poll, defending CACC champion Concordia College garnered eight of nine first place votes to finish at the top of the poll with 80 points. The Clippers reached the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division II women's tennis championship last spring. Goldey-Beacom was selected second in the poll. The Lightning recorded their best season in the program's short five-year history last year with a 13-5 overall record and a 7-1 mark in CACC play. Goldey Beacom fell  to Concordia, 5-3, in the 2009 CACC Tournament championship match and earned an at-large berth in the 2009-10 NCAA East Region Tournament, falling to Stonehill in the opening round.
Holy Family University also earned an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament and was ranked third in this years poll with 60 points, followed by Philadelphia university who earned the remaining first place vote and was fourth with 52 points.

Rounding out the poll is the Chestnut Hill College (37 points); Georgian Court University (39); University of the Sciences (34 points); Post University (18) and Caldwell College (16).

The Devils return five of their six singles players from their 2009 squad, led by sophomore Sara Durham (Sacred Heart HS/Bridgeton, N.J.).and junior Juliet Choi (Clarkstown H.S./New City, N.Y.).   Durham was 6-10 this season playing in the #1 singles position while Choi was 5-8 in singles playing primarily in the #5 and #6 slots. Juliet alos led the Devils with seven doubles wins.  Zahra Hasan (Ward Melville HS/East Setauket, N.Y.) returns for her final season as does Bridget Frymoyer (Governor Mifflin HS/Shillington, Pa.).  The two seniors alternated between the #2 and #3 singles positions last year.  Junior Laney Jones (Wyoming Seminary HS/Blakeslee, Pa.) rounds out the returnees.  Jones had four singles wins last year and was second on the team with six doubles victories.

In 2009-10, the USP women's tennis team finished in fifth place in the CACC, recording a 4-4 conference mark and a 4-10 overall record.
