Devils compete at ITA Regional Championship
Members of the University of the Sciences Women's Tennis team competed on Saturday and Sunday at the ITA East Regional Championship held at the Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Sophomore Sara Durham was the only women's player to come away with a win in the competition, which featured 96 singles players in two brackets and 47 doubles teams in two brackets. Durham, playing in the "B" Singles bracket won her first match, 8-6 over Brittany Villa of Philadelphia University, before losing to Vanessa Leon of Georgian Court University in the round of 32.
In other singles matches featuring USciences student-athletes, Bridget Frymoyer lost to Kara Pease of Southern New Hampshire University, 8-3 while Laney Jones dropped and 8-4 decision to Linda Piecyk of Holy Family University. Zahra Hasan lost to Sam Jean of Southern New Hampshire, 8-4 while Michelle Adamczyk lost to Hillary Gall of Georgian Court 8-2. Desiree Vassalotti suffered her first singles loss of the season, falling to Gabrielle Discroce of Merrimack College, 8-6. All five of these matches were in the opening round of the "B" singles bracket.
In doubles competition, Durham and Hasan lost their first round match in the "A" doubles bracket, 8-2 to Amber Chandronnait and Alena Mukdaprokorn of Southern New Hampshire. Chandronnait later went on to win the "A" Singles title for the second straight year. Jones and Vassalotti lost to Anastasia Chibrikova and Melanie Bonomo of Goldey Beacom College 9-8 (3) in what was the closest match of the entire "B" doubles bracket. Frymoyer and Adamczyk lost to Natalie Greici and Brittany Aimone of Georgian Court 8-4 in the Devils other doubles match.
The women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 when they host Chestnut Hill in a conference match at the Bergman Courts starting at 3:00 p.m.
